Snl - 4/11

FINALLY!! An "SNL" that didn't suck. Again, nothing on tonight so I started the show expecting to change the channel after 5 minutes. And I kept it on. Ray Romano did a fantastic job. I didn't catch him looking at the cue cards once. He was quite possibly the best host since Alec Baldwin. Well, excluding the last time he was on. And thumbs WAY up on the musical guest Zwan. They were great.

Yeah, the episode wasn't too bad... a few of the sketches were very funny... I loved the sound fx screw up on Update...probably funnier than if it had gone off without a hitch... Update had two real good zingers too... Ray was very good and I thought he was pretty funny...

It was better then I expected it would be.

the cnn skit with Hammond as Aaron Brown was good just because he was deadon with the impression.

I liked the Access Hollywood skit too.

I laughed quite a bit. I figured that Ray wouldn't be too terrible.

Yes, pretty good show tonight, and Romano was an excellent host.

Opening - Standard Saddam bit, but at least Fallon wasn't there to fake-laugh with Sanz

Monologue - Kind of long, but at least Romano did it solo. AND he was funny.

"What's the Rush?" - I thought Meyers was really funny during this.

"Wake Up, Wakefield" - I always love this bit. Dratch as Sheldon is perfect. Adrian Brody is a hunk?

W.U. - Decent jokes, but the sound effect screwup was the highlight. Fey was right, it wasn't funny without the sound.

Rialto Grand Casino - The one clunker of the show. Not funny, although "Hold.....hold....and release." made me smile.

CNN - Just filler. The crawl at the bottom of the screen was funnier than the bit.

Phone Booth - Hilarious. Romano was great here.

"Access Hollywood" - Fallon does a good O'Brien, and another good skit for Romano. "In the be-hind!" and "Sweeeet pooper!"

"Club Traxx" - Not that good, but at least it had the graveyard spot.

Uday Hussein - More filler, with a decent punchline.

Cast Appearances

Horatio Sanz
2 speaking parts - opening, Wakefield
1 cameo - Phone Booth

Maya Rudolph
3 speaking parts - opening (voiceover), Wakefield, Traxx
1 cameo - Rialto

Amy Poehler
2 speaking parts - Rush, Access Hollywood
1 cameo - Rialto

Seth Meyers
2 speaking parts - Rush, W.U.

Rachel Dratch
2 speaking parts - Wakefield, Traxx
1 cameo - Rialto

Jimmy Fallon
3 speaking parts - W.U., Rialto, Access Hollywood

Tina Fey
1 speaking part - W.U.
1 cameo - Rialto

Darrell Hammond
3 speaking parts - W.U., CNN, Phone Booth (voiceover)

Fred Armisen
3 speaking parts - Rialto, Traxx, Uday Hussein
1 cameo - W.U.

Chris Kattan
2 speaking parts - Rialto, CNN

Tracy Morgan
1 speaking part - Phone Booth

Dean Edwards
1 speaking part, heck, one line - Phone Booth

Jeff Richards
1 measly cameo - W.U.

Chris Parnell & Will Forte
Zip, zero, zilch. They were both there, because I saw them on stage at the close of the show.

Next live show - May 3rd with Ashton Kutcher. I don't watch his sitcom, but he seems likely to be a pretty lively host.

Honk!

ray romano was a really good host..the show was a lot better than most of the rest of this season. I didn't like the phone booth spoof very much though

I caught most of it, not all. I'm still missing the relevancy of the show as of late. The laughter too.

Decent episode. Romano was good as always. I was so hoping they'd get Chet Harper back and started to lose hope as the episode progressed, but thankfully they worked him in. Sweet sassy molassey! Loved the Aaron Brown bit. The jokes weren't that funny, but the impression was perfect.

I turned to channel 4 around 11:25p.

At 11:29p my faucet started slowly dripping.

I weighed my options and decided that my faucet would be VASTLY more entertaining.

Thanks to Charlie Goose's breakdown of the show, i've determined there was nothing to see..

I must mention that there were two instances where my faucet took its time between drips so, out of curiosity, I went to the TV and caught the last half of the "Phone Booth" skit -- blah. The second time I caught the Uday commercial. Funny punchline.

I am eagerly awaiting the Ashton Kutcher/50 Cent extravaganza..

I didn't laugh once. However, I did think that Romano did an excellent job, given the material.

Funniest joke during Weekend Update was from Tina Fey:

"Daryl Strawberry was released from a Florida prison Tuesday after serving 11 months for violating his probation on cocaine possesion charges.......

3......

2......

1......

and he has been arrested again!"

I have to plug MadTV. It comes on the same time as SNL so I end up Tivoing it. Although it too can be a bit spotty, it's still much more consistently funny than SNL. Last night was a perfect example.

The CNN bit was the best. I've been doing the Aaron Brown impression around the house for the past few weeks and I was laughing hysterically watching it on SNL. It's probably most funny to those who have stared at Aaron Brown for the past 3 or 4 weeks, others won't get it.

I think it was ok till about the WU and then downhill. You know its a bad week of writing when everyone has to mention penis size.

Best joke might have been the one about the Casablanca remake - "Its for people who liked the original but wish that it was terrible."

Zwan was good.

I thought the best lines from update were:

"The new trend in fashion for women this summer is expected to be short-shorts, with some inseams being reduced to less than two inches. While men will most likely make a return to wearing the classic boner"

and the aforementioned:

“It is rumored that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez want to star in a remake of ‘Casablanca.’ This will be the perfect film for people who liked the original, but wished it was terrible.”

I also liked in Wakeup Wakefield the principals line that

"The trip to the fortune cookie plant has been cancelled because two of their workers have come down with SARS."

and "Jazz times Ten's new cd: Jazz Times Ten - Tromboner"
