Best Show on TV

Divide this up: best network show, best show overall.

The best show on network television is Alias. Great writing and scripting, tremendous acting, amazingly hot women and even hotter action sequences. It remains the only show on television that consistently catches me off guard.

The best show period is... Comedy Central's The Daily Show. No other show makes me laugh as easily and consistently. Start with Jon Stewart, the funniest man in show business. Throw in Steven Colbert and Steve Correl, with the most perfect deadpan delivery style. Add in crisp writing and great guest interplay, and presto! The best half hour on TV.

Of course, that's just my opinion... what do you think?

das Monkey 03-20-03 10:36 PM

The weekly "Best Show on TV" thread ... ;)

Best Network Show: The West Wing
Best Overall Show: The Shield

The Daily Show does rule though (so does Alias of course). I love Conan and Letterman, but even they aren't as consistently funny as The Daily Show is. I'm amazed at how they can keep such a high level day after day. I miss Beth Littleford and Vance DeGeneres and haven't completely gotten on board with Ed Helms and Rob Cordry just yet, but it's still damn funny. It was funny when Kilborn was hosting, but it's just brilliant now that Stewart is at the helm.

Best Network Show: 24
Best Overall Show: Probably 24 as well.

I like The Daily Show (Any show that uses scenes from Ricki-Oh rules.), don't care for Alias - it's way too fluffy and the episodes tend to get uninteresting within the first 10 minutes.... and rarely manage to get it back. Tends to be pretty predictable and overall pretty underwelming.

Still love 24, haven't watched The Shield or any of this season of Six Feet Under.

warpcorebreach 03-20-03 11:24 PM

Buffy, Alias, Angel and Farscape.

das monkey is partly right. the best show on tv period is the west wing.

nny 03-20-03 11:47 PM

Definitely Angel for both. The whole season has been like one continuing story. I don't think I've ever seen that before. I absolutely hate that most TV shows focus on standalone episodes. If I wanted single episode stories, I'd watch a movie or read a novel. I remember Murder One bragged that they were going to spend a whole season on one story, but it never felt that way to me.

Gilmore Girls deserves an honorable mention because I don't think they have ever had a bad episode.

Doughboy 03-20-03 11:55 PM

Another vote for Angel. I've always been a diehard Buffy fan, but this season there's been an almost embarassing gap in quality between the two shows. Honorable mention goes to Alias, 24, and the likely-to-be-cancelled Andy Richter Controls the Universe.

Best show on network: Scrubs
Best show on cable: Clone High USA . (Don't let the fact that it's on MTV fool you. As good as The Simpsons in its prime.)
Best show on PAY cable: Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Scrubs is darn good -- every week I find something else to laugh about. And call me crazy, but I still get a kick out of Friends. I am also a huge fan of a show nobody watches... CBS's The Amazing Race

Wish I could include Battlebots in my list, but apparently the network execs at Comedy Central are more interested in listening to their alien overlord masters than to actual viewers...

Penn & Teller's episode on second-hand smoke kind of ticked me off... and I think they spend too much time trying to look clever and funny and not enough time disproving the wackos out there. The Sopranos would have topped the list for me if not for the dreaded Season 4. And as for Law & Order... hell, I still miss Jill Hennessey.

Deftones 03-21-03 09:44 AM

Network: 24
Cable: The Shield

Neither are my #1 favorite show, but they are in in the top 5.

There are actually quite a few fans of The Amazing Race around here, we are just patiently waiting for CBS to air the next season. Supposedly they have pushed it back until May or June. It's the best reality show, imo.

Oh and I bailed on the shield after the 1st or 2nd episode this season.
Vic's character was just not doing it for me anymore.

mighty bold statement. this season isn't good at all. joey is the only thing carrying them. seems like they are trying to rest on the goodness that the show once had. their whole ploy now is to get the actors as famous as possible and bring in guest stars to make the audience tune in, and it works. the more famous the actors get the more i tune in, ditto x 2 when there is a guest star, but what is lacking in the end is the show. it isn't good anymore. for a good one check out the one with joey's fridge out of season 6. top notch episode and my favorite.

I have to give props to the fans of the show here at DVDTalk. I never watched it until I saw all the praise and recommendations...so I finally tuned in, and am glad I did!

BizRodian 03-26-03 11:40 PM

There is currently no show on domestic TV that I have to see every week and actually get excited about it being on. I still watch Buffy and Angel, but both are dead to me as shows I love "Angel just recently died for me :()

I'm in love only with Standalone Complex... GOD HELP ME if I start to dislike that, right now I adore it!

This season rocks! :) Sorry that it isn't bringing joy and laughter into your life.

No, no. For a top notch episode, and my personal favorite, check out The One Where Everybody Finds Out. Season 5 = da bomb :)

JuryDuty 03-27-03 11:25 AM

24 followed closely by Alias for both categories.

;) Just kidding. I enjoy that episode too.

It's all good. :D

Best show on TV right now is Scrubs, without a doubt. Well, I'm sure there's doubt, otherwise this thread would've died long ago.

The other shows that I wait for each week are, That 70s Show, The Simpsons, and Survivor.

Honorable mention has to go to Alias, Buffy and 24, but I'd rather wait til the latter comes out on DVD and I can skip through the space filler sequences. Kim is the reason good shows go bad!

greatjedi 04-01-03 01:31 AM

My favorite show has to be coupling. Every time I watch it, I look like this: rotfl rotfl rotfl Uh, except there's only one of me.
