Kudos to Fox and America's Most Wanted

Fox gets bashed a lot in this forum, but I do want to give them props for keeping America's Most Wanted on the air. I don't watch the show but I thank God for the people who do watch it and pay attention. Elizabeth Smart has been safely reunited with her family thanks to the hard work of the people at America's Most Wanted.

If you think that FOX keeps AMW on the air because of a concern for the American public, you are mistaken. What the rescue of Elizabeth Smart DOES show is that the American public is sometimes more vigilant than the FBI or any other law enforcement agency.

Groucho 03-13-03 07:48 AM

Those pictures have been shown all over the local media here in Utah as well. The people who called in the tip may have never even seen that show. We can't give full credit to Fox and America's Most Wanted here.

-rolleyes-
Give me a break. The American public more vigilant than the FBI or law enforcement agencies? The power lies not in the vigilance, but in the sheer number of bumbling morons in this country. One of us is bound to see or know something. The FBI and the police cannot be everywhere, and cannot see everything. (Neither can the American public, but our chances are better).

But, back on subject: kudos to AMW. You did good.

The people who called in the tip did see it on AMW. From what I understand, it was AMW who were able to put out the composite of the new suspect. The police did nothing. They probably assumed the case died when the first suspect died in jail.

I guess the police did manage to find the press conference though and managed to show up and congratulate themselves on their hard work.

Don't put words in my mouth. I was just illustrating the fact that millions of idiots not trained in investigation can have better luck than dozens of specialists, only because of the numbers involved.

Drive-In Nut 03-13-03 02:32 PM

Those were not words, they were chocolate salty balls. Anyway, why does everyone have to be a bumbling moron or an idiot? The fact that someone has not been trained in investigation doesnt make them a Morf. HEY! Guess what....I have tried 3 beers. Labatt Blue is my fave. The other two were Coors Light and Iron City. Back to the subject, I did say that SOMETIMES the public is more vigilant. Sure, your strength in numbers theory is a good one, but it seems like in THIS case the authorities kind of dropped the ball.

Jobronie 03-13-03 02:47 PM

Yesterday one of the news channels claimed that someone recognized Smart as she was literally walking in front of one of her billboards......

I believe that Fox was planning on cancelling AMW a few years ago due to declining ratings. There was a huge backlash, so they decided to keep it around for a while. I would think a big catch like this earned it a few more years at least.

Personally I think all 4 networks should be required to play AMW at the same time each week, as a public service.

I'd hate to see the crap they'd replace it with
I rarely watch it anymore, but it is one of Fox's better shows
even if it was fictional it's still be better than most of their stuff
it's a reality show that can truly be called reality, as can Cops

They actually DID cancel it but got inundated with complaints from local law enforcement agencies, government officials, the general public, etc. and decided to keep it on the air. That was also when they renamed it "AMW: America Fights Back," from just "AMW."

I am all glad for the finding of Elizabeth Smart.

But I believe I heard AMW bask in their glory 50 thousand times Saturday night.

"We were the only ones to show the photographs of Emmanuel now identified as....."

" NAME? (The dad) Smart came to us to show the photographs of 'Emmanuel'."

"America's Most Wanted was the only one to bring you the photos of Emmanuel."

Just tell us once, and then get on with it.
