Isn't the series finale to Seinfeld fitting?

I remember when this first aired, there were many people who said they hated it. I've only met a few people who actually liked it. In retrospect, what better way to end the series than to send them to prison? There are several times thruout the series when they are told they should be locked up. It seems to be the most logical way to wrap up this series.

When I watched it, I really disliked it. Then again, I was never a huge Seinfeld watcher. It was a nice show, but I didn't love it, and I still don't watch it.

I did appriciate <b>palebluedot</b>'s take on the finale in the previous thread. I never looked at it that way, but it makes a lot of sense. And when considering some other series finales *cough*Roseanne*cough* this one was better than average.

I totally changed my mind about the ending. I didn't like it at first, but then after reading the comments in the other thread, I totally missed the main point of the entire series. Now I think it's fitting.

Now why didn't that show up in my search? I searched for all threads containing Seinfeld in the TVTalk board. Searched "any date." Must have missed it, sorry!

I did read thru that thread, and I don't see anybody there picking up on all the foreshadowing in the series that these people should be locked up. I can't think of the specific episodes, I've been watching several over the last few months between TBN and my local UPN affiliate, and I recall several times when people would get mad at them and declare these people should be locked up. The episode where George steals that woman's bread comes to mind.

It was really a lame last episode.
If they had never paid for all the things they had done to people thats wone thing but they did so having them put in prison was a reallll bad idea!!!

Yes, it was fitting. It was fitting for a group of writers who were so totally in love with their own words, that they had to parade them all out as if to say, "See? See? Aren't we geniuses?"

I don't know I liked it from the first time I saw it. I guess I wasn't expecting some super huge fun happy hour, because I am able to avoid most show hype by not watching commercials that often. That final prison bit was the perfect ending.

The finale was stupid. Years of creative shows, they saved their worst for last.

That is one of my all-time favorite finales. The jail sequence was simply classic because it didn't seem to change them at all - they went about doing what they always did.

The thing I did like about the finale is how they integrated many of the more memorable characters from seasons past. Seinfeld was very much about quirky characters (Soup Nazi; women with real breasts - Terri Hatcher; the virgin; Jackie Chiles; etc.), phrases, and everyday products. I think they needed a way to tie all of these things together, and a court trial was probably one of the better ways to do it.

What every single post in this thread is missing out on -- and what most of the posts in the previous thread also skimped over -- is that the SEINFELD finale was just not funny.

Forget the irony, forget the foreshadowing and the metaphors -- in the end, there were 180 half-hour episodes of SEINFELD, and on the Laugh-o-Meter, this one rates about 178. And since it is a comedy series above and beyond everything else, this episode failed miserably IMO.

Fitting, yes. Funny, no.

Interesting. I am wondering what your bottom two Seinfeld episodes are.

I agree 100%. I remember being intensely disappointed with the finale when I first saw it. I seem to remember there not being a single good, solid laugh in the entire thing.

I think this episode was on tbs last night (the trip right), where the gang gets arrested for not showing courtasy to a person getting robbed. (i missed part 2), great episode, too bad I'll have to wait like 6 months to see part 2.

palebluedot 03-06-03 05:40 PM

Speak of the devil...the finale is on tonight.

Steve Phillips 03-06-03 05:53 PM

Since the characters were famously shallow and self absorbed; I found the finale to be fitting. Besides; they wouldn't have really spent the time in jail after an appeal, and even if they did they'd be out by now, back to their old lives. It's not like they all died in a car wreck in the last scene.........

Cheddarmuff 03-06-03 07:23 PM

Similar to a new Star Wars movie...you will never make anyone happy because there is so much anticipation and excitement that the result is usually a let down.

Either way, I still enjoy watching Seinfeld...

Part one was on last night, part two tonight. That's what got me thinking about it, actually.

Rypro 525 03-06-03 08:28 PM

I thought pt 2 came on last night at 730 since pt one came on at 630. (it is called the trip right?)

Lastblade 03-07-03 01:03 AM

I liked it the 2nd time I watched it, but it wasn't all that funny... Oh well, it is over, time to move on since they will never put this on DVD.

costanza187 03-07-03 05:18 AM

I wasnt too thrilled with the ending

Brain Stew 03-07-03 10:48 PM

The first time I saw the Seinfeld finale, I was in 8th grade and did not entirely grasp the idea. To me I was seeing some of the funniest people in the world thrown in jail. Now that I have grown up a little, and saw the episode where George parks in the handicap spot yesterday, I can totally see that they are selfish bastards that deserve everything they get. They may be New Yorkers, but some of the stuff that they have done is despicable!
