The Star Trek vs Buffy vs B5 discussion v2.0
 

Since we seemed to be having a grand old time in the previous thread, and I still had a question for Mr K, I thought I'd fire up v2.0 of the Vs. discussion.

Ah - but it does have all kinds of relevance to the conversation! Observe:

You say that you can't get into Babylon 5 because of the often dubious special effects. You've also said that you don’t like Buffy for the camp and over the top nature. In addition you've said that you've enjoyed Doctor Who - or at the very least you didn’t seem to mind it.

However Doctor Who is infamous for it's amazingly bad special effects (The Horror of Fang Rock, AKA the one with the blob in the Lighthouse is a prime example). The show has also gone WAY over the top into camp and pantomime - some might say that everything past the Tom Baker era was nothing but panto and camp.

Given all that, I'm wondering why you can't get into Buffy and/or B5.

In this instance, I'm more straight up genuinely curious more than wanting to argue a point.

I really don't see how a Star Trek fan can make fun of other shows effects. In the Trek universe ever alien species looks just like a human except for some strange bump on thier forehead or nose and a funny haircut. At least the other shows try to make aliens look like aliens even if they do look cheap or cheesy.

(and yes, I'm aware of the one episode that explains this away)

B5 rocks over Star Trek any day :)

I've been a Trek fans for decades, and only a recent convert to B5, but if season one of B5 is any indication (any many of you say it gets even better), B5 can hold its own against any sci-fi out there.

Well, my main point was that Dr. who was filmed in the 1960's so I don't see how you could compare it's special effects to shows that were filmed in the 1990's... I simply call those bad effects 'innovation'.

Babylon 5 had no such excuse. Their excuse is called 'lack of money'.

I'll ignore Wizdar's comment because I'm probably older than him... This forum isn't my life, so I don't check everyday... Between work, buying a new house and getting married, it's been tough to keep up with you knuckleheads.

BTW I love the other post, it has more like minded Trek fans :)

Hmm, maybe this proves the validity of my original thesis somehow.

BTW, costumes and make-up is not considered an 'effect'. We're referring to the ACTUAL special effects... Ships, shooting, exploding...

And if you dismiss the trappings of a universe then you aren't standing on any solid ground. ST had plenty of aliens that weren't humanoid. Clouds, Oil Slicks, flowers, disembodied brains, energy forms, etc etc etc... I'm sure B5's aliens are all non-humanoid?? Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's a difficult question ... depends on your definition of "humanoid." Many of the regular species exhibit a bilateral symmetry, but of the major races, the Vorlons and Shadows are far from human on any level (and don't exhibit that symmetry and questionable corporeal form), the Narn are reptilian, the Centauri have tentacles, God knows what the Drazi are, and don't get me started on the Pak'Ma'Ra. Minbari are humanoid, but (mild spoiler)
