"Friends" : Time to go

Not since "Roseanne" have I seen a series that I love so much completely tank in it's final years. I think seasons 1-7 of "Roseanne" were absolute classics. The last two were trainwrecks. And while I think the first few years of "Friends" were the best, I would rate the last few seasons way above average. With some great episodes scattered throughout. But this season? God, it's so depressing to watch. It is TERRIBLE! The writing is absolutely abysmal. I only keep watching because I hope they pull out of this rut. But so far, they haven't. I have no idea how they're going to stretch this out for the rest of this season and then next year. What a shame......

MrX 01-30-03 10:07 PM

I didn't have a problem with this episode.

I thought the Chandler and Joey eyebrow thing was funny.

I figured Joey's place was where Rachel was going. I know it won't happen but I like Rachel/Joey better then Rachel/Ross, that might be because of my total hatered of Ross though:)

Red Dog 01-30-03 10:10 PM

I've said it for quite a long time now. They should have ended the series after they all went to Vegas.

freedexter 01-30-03 10:21 PM

I've never thought "Friends" was the most consistant series out there. I don't keep high expectations when tuning in, so I don't think I've ever been extremely disappointed by an episode.

I wouldn't compare it to "Roseanne", though. The last season was truly horrific. At least "Friends" still makes sense, and while it's always been a little farfetched, at least nobody died or won the lottery.

Yeah, that last season of Roseanne was just beyond words.

"Jumping the Shark" does not do justice. Nor does the term "train wreck." It was just ghastly. I've NEVER seen anything bottom out so badly. Not even "Caddyshack 2."

Well, even though this is a bit off-topic, yeah...you know you shouldn't even bother when Roseanne lets her daughters write the show. -ohbfrank-

And rumor has it, ABC was considering spin-offs for some of the other characters, but she wouldn't have it, so she planned the finale so that it was impossible for it to occur, since she wanted to be part of the spin-off. Of course, it's all speculation, but it doesn't sound too farfetched.

Yes, please don't compare this season of Friends to the last couple of Roseanne, that is just rude and disrespectful.

Tonight was okay, but I saw no need for the additional ten minutes. Again, Joey was good (as he has been for the last couple of years, consistently speaking). Chandler and him were cracking me up.

I am sick and tired of the Ross/Rachel storyline - enough already! Move on with it. Both characters are better when not in the same scene w/ each other, imo.

I like Phoebe w/ Mike, they play off of each other well.

As the seasons go on, Monica is grating my nerves more and more. She is definitely getting more annoying every ep. Her character has no appeal anymore.

at least they had the AC cranked in Ross's apartment

Gasspasser 01-30-03 11:11 PM

It is strange. At first (years ago) Ross was an alright guy. But now whenever he is on screen I want to smack him and ask him what he is doing. Is this intentional, ya know, to make people hate him.

No, I will compare the two. While I don't think this season of "Friends" is anywhere near as bad as the last year of "Roseanne", it's not too far behind. Watching both, is (was) like watching completely different shows. And not even a shadow of what they once were. It's as if pod people took over and sucked the life (and humor) out of each. I still Tivo reruns of "Roseanne". But immediately delete the last two years when they are on. Like they don't even exist. I will do the same with "Friends" one day. Well, at least this season. I'm still hoping they can pull out of this slump.

That white shirt Rachel had on was nice, wasn't it?

Matt LeBlanc is carrying the show. I really liked last season. I love the whole Joey loves Racheal bit. Joey had the gayest looking eye brows.

Draven 01-31-03 12:02 AM

Huh. I like these episodes as much as the earlier seasons.

Kal-El 01-31-03 12:47 AM

I still like it. :)

I LOVE FRIENDS!!!!!!! AHAHAHAH! SO BITE ME.

:)

Ok well I hate Ross, but doesn't everyone?

Friends was ok in the beginning, but it picked up for me at least when the whole Monica/Chandler thing happened.

hotaru_san 01-31-03 08:58 AM

I agree that it's not at the level where it used to be. I don't hate it at this point, but I do wish that they wouldn't have agreed to another season.

Chandler used to be my favorite character, but since he married Monica I've been getting sick of him. The Ross and Rachel thing is a mess, Ross seems like a total loser. I haven't liked him since he dated a student. I agree that Joey is by far the best character lately.

I'll second both of those statements. Phoebe and Mike are like the new Joey and Chandler. Phoebe's character has been going downhill the past couple seasons as they try and come up with shocking things for her to say at inappropriate times. She was becoming borderline creepy for a while, but giving her a sane boyfriend should help.

I never really liked Monica (or Ross) in the first place, but I dislike her more now for dragging Chandler down with her. He was funnier with Joey.

hgar78 01-31-03 10:44 AM

i'll second the irritation with monica! that character just bugs me, i dont know if it's her neuroses or bossiness/control-freakiness but since the london episodes the character (and i dont know if it's the writers or c.cox) has become exaggerated big time.

i always loved chandler (still do) but i agree he's mellowed since getting married to hell-on-wheels.

ross has been my least fav. character. too much of a sissy-boy, it's like the writer's want him to be gay!

still love the show though!

Rachel and Ross have a fight and Rachel decides to move out with Emma and asks Joey if they can stay with him. He said yes. During the credits Chandler gets up on stage and sings. I can't recall what off the top of my head.

Joy to the World ("Jeremiah was a Bullfrog..."). Chandler does some cute/funny dance moves as he sings the first two lines then looks out into the audience, stops singing, and says "You'll touch yourself to anything, won't you?"

The Antipodean 01-31-03 11:25 AM

The show's just fine to me. It's as silly and goofy as it's ever been, but nobody was expecting Dostoyevsky here. It's a good solid sitcom, and it gets the job done. I do think they should wrap it up next year as they're planning, before all the characters hit 40, but I don't think it's seen a huge downturn in quality at all.

cooper2000 01-31-03 12:11 PM

Thats why they should have kept this season being the last but greedy NBC doesnt have anything else to replace it so...

Chew 01-31-03 12:37 PM

I'll have to agree that this should of been the last season. As has been said, most of the characters are getting a little annoying. Joey, has been, and continues to be my favorite character.

Although it might be better for everybody that they don't do a spin-off, I wouldn't mind seeing Joey as the central character in one.
