Extended Cut of Dune on SciFi Tonight
 

If anyone cares, the movie Dune is on tonight at 7:00 E on SciFi. It's the version (4 hours with commercials) with previously cut footage that David Lynch supposedly disapproves of, so this version is actually directed by "Alan Smithee". If you haven't seen this version before, it's worth watching IMO.

What type of stuff...I have always liked this movie..

this is only the 79th time SciFi has shown it. Dune(extended) and Blade Runner(extended) are the 2 biggest non-B movies SciFi has at this point. And they don't let you forget it.

I'm sure between now and March this will get replayed alot since they're airing Children of Dune in March.

Actually the extended version of the Theatrical DUNE is great. It fills in many of the holes the Editor left out. Apparently he was high on CRACK when he chopped it up originally. :mad:

I just wish I had a tv to watch it. :(

This was the first time I've seen Lynch's cut. I watched the opening montage of exposition and I thought I was watching a cartoon because all of the still images are drawings! Talk about cheap.

As I continued to watch, I noticed how the sets were so dark and dreary compared to the bright color scheme of John Harrison's version.

Just so you know, the so-called "extended verson" is NOT Lynch's cut. In fact, Lynch was so upset about it he had his name removed from that particular version as both the director (now, Alan Smithee) and screenwriter (now, Judas Booth).

Those cheap still drawings you are talking about were one of the things inserted into the film without his consent. The extra footage -- while interesting in and of itself -- has been inserted into this film with a distinct lack of skill and artistry. Footage is reused time and again to "extend" scenes and fake scenes that were never scripted or shot. FX shots are obviously incomplete. At one point, near the end, they actually use a pencil sketch in place of a model.

Lynch's cut is the theatrical version, which runs 2 hours and 17 minutes and is available on DVD.

I believe the extended cut is available on DVD in Europe as well.....and I think that all the TV showings of Dune are the extended cut..I could be wrong though

Yes, you can get it in various Region 2 Europeon countries (in PAL) or in Region 2 Japan (in NTSC).

So it's not available in R1 right? A co-worker is arguing that she found it for her boyfriend but it "was very difficult to get." I think she's full of it.

Not legally, anyway. There may be bootlegs floating around out there, but I've never seen one.

The problem is that (for non-fans), the versions of Dune can get quite confusing:

1. 1984 theatrical edition
2. Extended, TV version of the 1984 theatrical
3. Recent sci-fi miniseries
4. Extended, director's cut of the sci-fi miniseries.

[Some people even confuse this further by including various 'cut and paste' jobs between #1+2 that some local stations have aired.]

When someone says "hey, do you have the TV version of Dune?" they could be referring to either #2, #3, or #4.

If someone asks about the extended version of Dune that they saw on the Sci-Fi channel, they could very well be referring to #4. It gets pretty confusing for most people.


But, version #2 on my list (which is what the sci-fi channel just showed) has never been officially released in the United States in any video format. It was released on laserdisc in Japan, and is available on DVD in several Region 2 flavors.

I have the R2, NTSC set from Japan, which is basically identical to the LD (except that you can remove the subtitles).
