I am sure Martha hid the piece to hide it from Lex and Lionel, who may come over and look for it. That is what I thought anyway. She doesn't trust them anymore, that is clear, and she may feel a tad vulernable in her own home right now. That is entirely speculation, of course, but I doubt you'd be thinking any less paranoid when you learned your boss was keeping tabs on your family's every move.
As to why she hid it from Clark and Johnathan, I think that may have to do more with the fact that they won't be forced to lie if they are confronted by the Luthors about it. And as for if they will open the ship? I have no idea when, but sweeps weeks are soon upon us.

Does anybody not think Lionel can see now? It's a helluva risky thing for a blind man to take a shot with a pistol otherwise. Not to mention how he found it so easily on the floor.
My TiVo cut off next week's preview (if there was one). Anybody care to post a recap in spoiler tags?

I was saying wow throughout the whole show.
1. Jumping off the Daily Planet, great touch!
2. Lots of sub-plots that will lasts for years to come
3. Martha being sneaky
4. Lex's dad being really sly about lots of things
5. Clark's dad turning the table on the Luthers without them knowing it
Man I love this show!

I'm with you guys. This was the episode that the series needed. My wife had lost interest in the show because of the krypto-baddie of the week themes. But last night...incredible. Well written, and it was cool seeing Clark at the Daily Planet for the very first time....

Was it just me or did anyone else think the jump scene special effects were cheesy?

I think the jump scene was done pretty well. I told my wife right before the jump that he'll finally figure out he can fly...guess not.

Did anyone notice how Jonathan and Lex had to take a helicopter to get to Metropolis, but Clark just ran. Lex never asked how Clark got there. That ruined things for me. Also, why did Lex's dad have a vidoe camera in his cd player if he is blind?

I think that Lex was busy with trying to nagotiate with the bad guys he didnt really notice... Sometimes you just dont notice stuff in the heat of the moment.
Lionel not being blind is a thought...

I think Martha hid the disc because she doesn't want to lose her family. She knows that the ship opens up when the disc goes in, and she knows it goes to Clark. She figures he'll have to go away when it's opened, rightly so. Poor Marlon Brando will have to wait a while longer to come out.
Good ep, cool leaping tall building. But I don't think Lionel was the one tapping Lex's house. At least, not the only one.

This was a good tension filled episode of Smallville. I find it very entertaining the way they handle all the principals involves and create the tension and doubt along the way. This is good plot-driven TV with a splash of character development tossed in for good measure.
I can't remember Clark having a fear of height being mentioned in earlier episodes, but by introducing it, and then having Clark have to face it or lose his mother, it was good character building moment. Plus the grin on his face once he rolls and lands in the Luthercorp building reminded me of when Peter Parker realized he had his amazing powers in Spider-Man.
There's a good possibility that Lionel has part of his sight back, but hasn't told anymore, and that could mean he saw Clark use his super powers earlier this season (and that would explain the whole hoarding of the meteor rocks and the file on Clark. Too bad Martha didn't get a good look at that file.

Lots of spoilers so beware:
Please don't take this as a thread crap 'cause I really do love Smallville, but...
1. There's no way Lex wouldn't be shocked to see Clark in Metropolis. He just rode an hour or so (I'm guessing) with Clark's dad in a helicopter and never thought "where's Clark?" IMO Clark should have just ridden the helicopter with them. Given the precedent set in the episode where he runs to the Metropolis airport to get the doctor it appears to take him an hour or more to run to Metropolis. The helicopter is a reasonable alternative to running over land, on winding roads, etc. Besides, it would have been an introduction to flying for Clark. Clark arriving first in no way furthered the plot besides Johnathan's line about heights and that easily could have been applied to the helicopter ride. He could have arrived with Johnathan & Lex, snuck off to the sewer grate and been confronted by the cop.
2. Clark jumps across the street and into a building and no one notices. Maybe, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.
3. Clark could have used some stealth in his dealings with the kidnappers. Instead he grabs the first one he sees and says "where's my mom!". X-ray vision would have worked, y'know. Then, when he goes to Lionel's office Martha starts screaming "Clark!" Assuming Lionel really is blind, keeping your mouth shut would have been a bit easier!!!. Just shut up and push the kryptonite into the safe while the guy is on the floor and let Clark carry on from there.
4. Lex: "Clark, how'd you get inside". Lionel: "He's resourceful, let's leave it at that". C'mon, do you think the cops are going to listen to, he's resourceful???? Nothing like making Lex & Lionel even more curious than they already were. I'm guessing it's part of the plot advancement but c'mon, there's no need to be so obvious about it.
5. Johnathan tells Martha to keep her job so the Kents can be on the inside and keep tabs on the Luthors and Martha seems agreeable. I'd think Martha would be uncomfortable with Lionel's advances towards her and would quit. Also, the previews for next week show John telling Lionel to stay away from his wife. Make up your mind, Papa Kent! I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since I haven't seen next weeks ep but it seems like the writers can put in a bit more effort.
Here's hoping that next week is better!
