SNL with Ray Liotta (01/18/03)

Finally, a very good show. Probably the best episode, with the best host, of the season so far. Best skit was Rachel Dratch as the pre-teen girl on the kiddie show who had matured visibly during hiatus. Interestingly, the weakest segment was the Weekend Update. WTF was it with the presidential candidiate during that segment? It dragged on and on.

Ray Liotta was on fire tonight. His impersonation of David Caruso showed that he's no Frank Gorshin, but he aced every skit with his energy and performance.

Yeah, that had to be the worst David Caruso impression I've ever seen. Luckily, I think it's the only David Caruso impression I've ever seen.

Liotta was pretty over the top all night, but I loved his energy. I really like it when a host goes all out.

The first half was okay. Liotta was pretty good [GO see Narc].

Once it saw the shark called Weekend Update they jumped it and never looked back...

I haven't really been paying attention, but I agree that the show really started sucking hard after WU.

And I didn't notice any mistakes or anything by Ray Liotta. It's better then the DeNiro episode.

The first half of the show was probably the funniest it has been all season, but of course after weekend update - it started to get worse. Thank god, the Donnas were able to do two songs. I love girls who can rock, there is just something sexy about it.

Patman 01-19-03 07:46 AM

I still think it was funny to see Liotta in the purple whatever suit, screaming his head off trying to read his cue cards with such intensity. I think that was funnier than the skit material. BTW, are those really Rachel'sboobs (talk about going all out, if so)?

Derrich 01-19-03 11:08 AM

I do believe that was all Rachel, sans bra....not that I was staring or anything...

girls that rock  girls that suck (the donnas) i like girl bands but their music was not good by any stretch, i had to stop watching for both performances.

i liked liotas musical montage at the begining, but it makes me wonder when a hot last had their own monologue, it seems like they have to pair up with a snl cast member or they'll flop.

as for weekend update, what were they thinking. the presidential candidate = dead weight. and tina and jimmy blowing their lines then repeating them is not as funny as they think it is. i know they are trying to be as fast-paced as possible but if it means blown lines talk slower!

i am going to have to stick with the tried and true for this episode. it blew. to quote yet another person's signature who again quoted buffy the vampire slayer. "i was bored...episode 1 bored."

I wasn't that impressed by this show, but I agree that Liotta let it all hang out, and did a great job.

Can Fallon make it through once sketch without smirking or starting to crack up?

You've got to be kidding. That Tim Calhoun skit was the funniest thing of the entire show! I was in tears (just like the last time he was on).

"Blind people think they're so cool."

Yeah, I love that Tim Calhoun bit ... glad they brought it back.

missed it

The Regis and Kelly skit was so hilarious and dead-on. I laughed harder at that than anything on SNL all season.

Kelly crapping out babies.

Chris Kattan as Gelman with his feather boa "My wife and I had dinner last night and then I went out to some clubs of my own afterwards."

I was dying. And how Kelly Ripa kept saying she loved David Caruso in "Jade". That was so classic.

"Who is James Cagney? No one knows who he is!" LOL.

Dr. DVD 01-20-03 01:48 PM

Did they make any allusions to Liotta playing Tommy Vercetti?

big whoppa 01-20-03 04:55 PM

There were some good moments (Live with Regis and Kelly with the outed Gelman) but the show was pretty dull overrall. The writing just doesn't cut it.

I missed this last time, glad I was able to catch it tonight. I thought it was good. The Regis and Kelly bit was hilarious and dead on.
