That 70's Show
 

I never see this show really mentioned on the forum , and I can't understand why not. It still consistently cracks me up and reminds me of how I interacted with my friends when I was 17.

Any comments?

Last night's episode was great - best of the new season. You gotta love Red's outlook on life.

I miss Tommy Chong though.

I never thought using Menopause as a running joke from episode to episode would work, but by gum it has :D Kitty is freaking hillarious.

The episode where Kelso first found out about Jackie/Hyde was classic.

I missed a lot of last season, and I'm really starting to regret it now that I'm watching it regularly again.

Unfortunately, it airs when my Tivo is taping "Buffy" and "Gilmore Girls" so I never get to see it.

I've been catching up on all the reruns in syndication in the meantime, and I'll watch when the other shows go on break. But I like it alot too.

speaking of re-runs, there was one of the earliest re-runs I have seen yet, Donna had a little sister! I don't ever remember that - it must have been the first half season, but I swore I saw all of the episodes. Speaking of sisters - did they ever explain where Eric's sister went - they just wrote her character off of the show a couple of seasons ago.

Thanks for reminding me - I need to watch last nights ep, I taped it.

This show is just as funny now as it was in the first season. Maybe it is a good thing it's not talked about a lot on this board, because it strikes me that the shows that get the most threads and replies on here are shows that the fans aren't happy with. That 70's Show has yet to jump any shark, as far as I am concerned, but my only fear is that one day it will. Now the kids are looking at colleges. I think it's close to time to end the series, not because it's doing bad, but to end it on a high note and at a logical point.

I remember that episode, and the one where they showed Jackie's parents, that never are seen again.

calhoun07 is correct. This is one show that hasn't jumped the shark, simply because they've kept with the formula. Sure a few side characters have come and gone, but the main cast is exactly the same. The jokes are usually funny, and the chemistry is great. I like how the show has running themes...storylines that carry from episode to episode (like Kitty's menopause). I also like the ensemble cast...no one character dominates the show.

Of course it can't go on forever. I hope it ends on a high note, preferably before they go to college.

Couple random things;

I believe Donna has an OLDER sister as well. I just saw a re-run where her parents specifically mentioned another girl, and without saying it explicitly it was implied that she was at college and Donna's older sister. I have seen the one with the younger one.

And Jackie's father has been in several episodes. I'm not sure we've ever seen Kelso's parents, however.

Has Jackie's dad appeared beyond a first person perspective? I remember the episode where he walked in on Kelso and Jackie fooling around in her room; it was like the opening scene to Halloween without the traumatization.

For the show to end when they go to college would mean that this would be the final season, and I'm not ready for that. I think the college years can offer them at least 2 years of potential high comedy.

Another random oddity: I caught the pilot for the first time since it's original airing. If you recall, Eric wants Red to allow him access to the family car (So he can drive the gang to a Todd Rungren concert). Red mentions that Eric is a 17 year old. Now factor that the pilot episode aired 4 years ago, even if the show has aged itself at a slower pace (Let's say 2 years), Eric would still be a 19 year old high school senior- 21 if it hasn't.

Red isn't joking when he calls him a dumbass.

And I agree, maybe it's a blessing in disguise that it has flown under the radar screen. Praise is given out pretty infrequently on this board.

Not to mention I think it was in the first season they saw Star Wars, which would have placed the show in 1977. If 4 years have passed since then, this is now That 80's Show!

If they do a college years type show, I think it would work best as a spin off. That 70's Show works best as it is with the kids in high school dealing with each other and their parents. If you put them in college, take the parents away, you lost that chemistry right there. Then it would place the characters in the early 80s.

it may be 1980, but we must remember that the 70s didn't really end until late 1982 or so (as my school portraits can attest :) ).....that said, I agree with all here that this is one of the most consistantly hilarious shows on televesion - thanks in large part to superior writing in addition to great characters....

And it doesn't hurt that Donna is freakin hot! :drool:

I just saw a rerun where Jackie's dad organized an event for Gerald Ford that Red was tapped to speak for. He was shown a number of times, 3rd person.

I think there was another one too, Jackie asked him something in his study. Can't remember though.

The producer's have already stated that 2 seasons of "That 70's Show" = 1 year for the characters. This way, it can go for 8 seasons before it hits the 80's. Smart move, IMO.

Kind of odd though - at the beginning they used to have an establishing title card (white type on black) which would say something like - August 16, 1978 - Eric Foreman's basement.

I thought the reason they abandoned that concept was because the show would eventually get stuck in the 70's however they obviously have to age the show as the actors get older.

As I recall they eventually started aging Laverne & Shirley (and possibly Happy Days) but putting a cast shot of them celebrating the new year at the end of the opening credits.

But you have to factor in that the show does not go like most shows:

Most shows go from season to season as being year to year. This show does not. (BTW, I believe the show is staying on the air until 2004 or 2005.)

And the kids are hardly in school anywhere in the show.



The cast is one of the best in a long time. They have excellent chemistry and the producers did a great job in picking them. Topher Grace who plays Eric is excellent in how he enunciates and used his facial expressions and hand gestures.

The Halloween where they go into the burnt elementary school had to be the funniest episode of the show. That scene shows how the entire cast does great with each other.

And I can't get over Fez's "You son of a beach."


I wish Lorrie was still on the show, though. She was also great with the cast. I loved her stories. How she and Eric battled it out. The episode where her professor comes over and Eric and Hyde find them kissing.

Great show.

one of the first couple of episodes eric celebrates his 17th birthday. last season they mention that he's 17 so the 2 seasons = 1 year doesnt really match up

As you can tell a lot of shows that start in their first season always change many things.

I believe now that any show that makes it past the first season change in small ways.
