i've never thought about it before but do the snl hosts get paid? i assume they do since it's a week-long "job" but just curious if it's scale pay or what. just curious.

If talk show guests get paid, then SNL hosts definitely get paid. I wouldn't know how much - I'd imagine it'd be scale since usually the host is promoting something....

i didn't think talk show guests got paid, that since it was in their contracts to promate their films, etc. they had to do it. oh well, you learn something every day! ;)

as a member of the Screen Actors Guild, the union, they probably require payment for every appearance

I've thought about this before and assumed they got paid, but they do get a chance to plug whatever they're doing, so it most likely isn't like "Friends" salaries. :)

I heard it's a very minimal amount. Some talk show guests have mentioned how much they get paid, and I've literally heard amounts like $100 or $500 thrown around...

I'm not sure about airfare and hotel, but the trade-off for the guests is to promote their "regular gig" where they make their real money.

I heard that it was an honor to guest host so they don't expect any payment. And then there's another opportunity to plug their latest project.

im sure snl pays for everything for them - flight, hotel, food, etc...and treats them very well. gives them the best everything. plus the honor and plugging their movie/music, etc makes it worth it. not to mention it being fun. i cannot see a guy who makes 10 mill per movie bothering to accept 500 bucks to be on snl for a week. why would he care?

I remember reading this somewhere, i know its true: Most SNL hosts would work for free, but some won't, so SNL gives each host, no matter who it is, $5000 per show.

They can promote there movie/show/etc. yes but you also have to factor in that this job gives SNL advertising $$'s so I'm sure the host gets paid a flat rate. nothing big, but you work live infront of a studio audiance working on skits that have taken a week to prepare for, you better get something

If you are SAG, and you appear on a show like Conan, Leno, SNL, etc.... You pretty much have to get paid or the show would get fined.

I remember a bit on Letterman where they had an emplyee leaving. i think this was in the NBC days, but either way it was quite a while ago. There was an employee leaving the show and Dave liked her, so for a week they had her go on camera and say something because the network had to pay anyone who appeared on camera, and you get extra if you spoke. They put up on the screen how much the network was required to pay her every time she went on. I think it was a few hundred bucks in her case. Not bad for less than a minute :)

I love how many of you think celebs do the show for free because it's an honor. Celebs don't get out of bed unless you dangle money in front of them. They get payed to appear on Connan and Letterman too. They get payed to be on Ohpera even though they are doing nothing but plug for an hour. The unions have seen to it.

What about radio shows like Howard Stern? And is it more if there segment appears on E!?

Howard Stern does not pay for guests. That (and about a million other reasons) is why most big celebs do not appear on his show. But when someone like Anthony Hopkins calls in you can at least be reassured that he isn't being payed, although he is plugging like there's no tommorrow. When was the last time a big celeb was on the radio show and then they played it on E? They never do it.
