Gays Hooked On 'SpongeBob' Cartoon
http://www.nbc4.tv/news/1710679/deta...110092002&ts=H
Creator Says Show Is About Tolerance POSTED: 10:03 a.m. EDT October 9, 2002 UPDATED: 12:26 p.m. EDT October 9, 2002 Forget about Tinky-Winky and the "Teletubbies" -- gays are now obsessed with the popular Nickelodeon cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants". The Wall Street Journal reports that gays are hooked on "SpongeBob's" optimism, his weird psychedelic world and strange sense of humor. One gay clothing designer says he likes "SpongeBob" because he's "not very masculine" -- and "he's soft." Talk show host Conan O'Brien recently asked Tom Kenny -- the voice of SpongeBob -- if his pal Squidward is gay. Kenny wouldn't say, but he did joke that "all the main characters are hiding horrible secrets." There's also speculation that SpongeBob and his friend Patrick are lovers. They're often seen holding hands. The show's creator says none of the characters is gay -- but he says gays like the show because it's about "tolerance." Hmmmmm Chris |
Let me just go ahead and debunk this right about now: Never seen an episode. Can I be hooked on something I've never seen?
|
I always thought this show was a thinly veiled advert for female birth control.

I'm not gay. Really, I'm not. But many people have thought I am. Does the fact that I love this show and AbFab make people think that? I don't think it's a "gay" show either, Spongebob is just pure innocence and love for life.
Besides, Chicken Boo on Animaniacs is a far better representation of the trials of the gay man. Think about the song, "You wear a disguise to look like human guys, But you're not a man, you're chicken boo" Just substitue gay, ****, faggot or your slur of choice, and it's a thinly veiled attack on homophobia. Every episode has him winning people's respect, until they find out he's a chicken, then they run him out of town. |
I've only seen part of SB once. Cute cartoon.
I'm surprised the writer of the article didn't mention housemates, Bert & Ernie from Sesame Street. :) |
Come on, it's pretty easy to figure this one out.. I mean sponge bob's best friend is a Male STAR FISH
the proof is in the... uh. I dunno. :p |
Since we're on gay symbols, what does the crabby pattie represent?
|
I always thought Sandy the Squirrell was a little masculine...

Something about the word "gays" bugs me. Maybe the fact that it's not really gramaticaly correct. I mean, we don't go around calling straight people "straights" do we? See what I mean? Why not say, "gay people," or, "homosexuals" or something. I guess "homos" is out, even though it's just an abbreviation.
Does this annoy anyone else? And no, I'm not offended! lol. No, really, bad gammer doesn't offend me. edit - it's one thing for Joe Schmoe to use it, but cmon, a news agency?? Shouldn't they be a little better trained in grammer than the rest of us? lol |

I'm gay and I've attempted to watch this show. After about five minutes I turned it off.
|
i think that this show is also geared to stoners, i always can find suttle references in there, its hillarious
|
It occured to me that the episode when Mrs. Puff goes to prision had tons of lesbian references. And she mentioned a "hidden past" in another epsiode.
Then again, she goes on a date with Mr. Krabs in another episode. Puzzling, if it only is wasn't an insignificant children's cartoon. |
