Dragon Con 2002 - quick thoughts

I am starting the Dragon Con 2002 thread in the TV section just because of the high TV (past/present) content of sci-fi/fantasy/action shows of years past/present to be discussed.

I'm dead tired, going on little sleep for 3 days hard (Monday was a breather, went to the Babylon 5 panel at 10 a.m., hit the dealers room and the walk of fame for another hour and then went to the Braves game with a couple of friends for the rest of the afternoon and got sunburnt on my ears and knee/thighs.

The big news for Buffy fans is that James Marster (Spike) is slated to make his Dragon Con debut next year. Julie Caitlin Brown announced at the Babylon 5 panel today (she into lining up celebs for conventions).

Robin Sachs (Ethan Rayne) would love to appear in a "Ripper" series starring Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) if it ever came about, but Robin lives in the US, and shooting the show (if it ever got greenlighted) would be in England.

Nichelle Nichols (Uhura on Star Trek TOS) loved talking about her pioneering role as an African American woman in the role of Uhura which inspired many other African American women to aspire higher than conventional wisdom at the time would allow. And Nichelle has a wonderful singing voice, she sang a tune for us, the fans in attendance, and it was nice.

The Babylon 5 panel is always fun and lively, though it doesn't seem like we'll ever see a feature film for B5 with the original cast member (but everyone is up for it if JMS writes it).

The Traci Lords "interview" hour was basically ruined by the "interviewer" who was pretty insufferable (think "It's all about me"). Traci came across pretty well, and is working on her biography, which is supposed to be coming out next summer, perhaps in June. Her porn past was the white elephant in the room that no one wanted to bring up. I guess people will have to settle for whatever she writes about it in her book.

Ted Raimi was very animated and funny, and told stories about his brother Sam Raimi and being in his "movies" for Sam as a kid.

Virginia Hey's hour dealt with how she got into the business (started in the creative arts side, got approached to be a model, used that money to funnel it back into projects, music videos, etc, and the acting).

If I think of other stuff, I'll post more. I'm brain dead.

I have over 1700 photos to sort through, so it might be a while before my photos are up. I'm trying to figure out a good way to incorporate thumbnails, but with so many photos, even a page full of thumbnails would take a long time to load (and I hate writing tons of pages with only 20 photos on each page). I'm in a quandary. My past Dragon Con page format is easier to navigate, but the photos demand you click on each link without knowing too much about what to expect, and that's sort of unfair to the surfer (I do categorize them, but it's still a pain).

Should I use my old format, or go more visual (at the expense of slower loading times)?

Personally I agree with you that thumbnails are the best way. I suggest putting thumbnails into catagories. Just make them small and compress the hell out of them. It wouldn't be too bad to load. For most of us on broadband it won't be a problem, and for those on dial-up...time to upgrade!

God, I'm exhausted too. This year I stayed in the hotel, which gave me more ability to party until 4/5 am each night. Trying to line up again at 9am each morning for 4 days proved quite tiresome.

I have about 13 rolls of film to get developed, and I'll try to organize the more interesting ones into something worth looking at.

Aside from a 3 hour break to watch Notre Dame kick the snot out of Maryland, I was doing something pretty much every second of the event. I took the approach to see panels from people I'd never seen before (unless it was Babylon 5, since everyone knows they bring the house down every year). So I missed Ted Raimi (though I saw the Dawn Contest he hosted), Virginia Hey (though I saw a Farscape panel she was in), and Nichelle Nichols (though I saw her prima donna, gimme $40 for an autograph, don't look directly at me self in the Walk of Fame).

Robin Sachs was very, very cool. He had some lame fan club at the event that was wearing his mug on their shirts and hounding him 24/7. He was a incredibly nice to them and even ate dinner with them on Saturday night. His wife was also a sweetheart and almost had a better sense of humor than he did. Correction to Patman's post: he doesn't want to be in Ripper ... he wants to be in Ethan and the Ripper. In one panel, there was a little girl in the front row (Angie, I think) who was absolutely star struck and couldn't bear to look at him. Every few minutes, he'd say something and turn to her, "isn't that right Ang?" She'd bury her head in her mother's chest until he started talking again. It was a riot.

I saw so many things and attended so many events that I don't know where to start, so I'll just keep dropping by and sharing thoughts periodically. I hope some others got a chance to attend, because as usual it was another incredible event highlighted by some very unique guests.

pbd, but even with thumbnails, I don't know if I want to put 100 thumbnails each for 12 pages (I don't want to do 60 pages with 20 thumbnails on them), which would require loading 300 kb or so for each page before getting to the good stuff.

You should just put them in a big-ass zip file. I know I'd download it and view them with my own thumbnail viewer.

If you want I can host on my ftp site for a while. I can put it on it's own dedicated DSL line.

Same thing for you das, if you want to do the zip file thing for your photos. Film...who the heck uses film anymore...get with 2K Ansel Adams....sheesh.

Let me know.

When you see some of my shots, you may change your mind. Digital would be wonderfully convenient, but I'd rather go for quality and versatility, and my zoom lenses take me places I otherwise couldn't get (wink wink).

Anyway, some more thoughts ... Linda Blair. Wow! She really was a fantasic guest. I was a little surprised how good she looked. She's always had a beautiful smile, but her body was looking pretty good for 43 years old as well. She did two panels, one for The Blair Bitch Project (a surprisingly entertaining parody) and a second solo Q&A. Scott LaRose, the comedian responsible for Blair Bitch was very strong and played numerous comedic bits through the woman signing for the deaf, something I'd never seen before. In both panels, Linda was very friendly and lively. She spent a lot of time talking about being a vegan and rescuing animals, but she was never "preachy" about it ... just something she had chosen for herself.

I spoke with her briefly in the Walk of Fame, and she was just as nice as could be with all of the fans. She did charge $5.00 for a photograph, which was fine since it went to charity and $5.00 is pretty inexpensive. But she hopped up from behind the table very enthusiastically for each person who stopped for a picture. It was really a pleasure to get to meet her and hear what she was all about. Hearing her talk about her experience on The Exorcist and Born Innocent was very informative, and it was great to see how strong her sense of humor was.

I think the biggest "theme" of this year's Dragon*Con was how much fun the guests were having. There were many complete newbies to the convention circuit and still more who hadn't done anything in the style of Dragon. Kent McCord, Julia Nixon, Andrea Thompson, Lisa Wilcox, and Lani Tupu really hadn't done any conventions until this year, and I'm pretty sure Traci Lords was new to the concept as well. Often guests will say nice things about being at conventions and such, but this time they were VERY vocal about how much fun they were having and how much they really wanted to come back. And veterans like Linda Blair and Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy from MST3K, who had never actually done Dragon*Con before, remarked how unique it was and how respectful Atlantans were compared to other cons they'd attended. It was great to have them dancing and partying along with all the rest of us at ridiculous hours of the night.

One thing scares me though. If Julie does bring Marsters and Boxleitner (she tried to get both this year but couldn't due to scheduling conflicts), it's going to be a freakin' mad house.

pbd, thanks for the offer. I don't know if I'll take you up on the offer at the moment (I do have some webspace, so I should be okay in that department), but you never know.

Boxleitner and O'Hare are the 2 B5 guys I've never seen in person (that I'd like to see).

If Marsters shows up, I will be at the Buffy panels because there will be some fine female fans in there for sure.

I was pretty impressed how many fine females were here this year. There's always a good assortment of hot ladies walking around among the ... um ... less than hot ladies, but this year it seemed like a better than average hottie contingent showed up to pay their respects.

Just to add my Linda Blair experience: I and my friends got to follow her from the Marriott to the Hyatt. Linda is in great shape! Nice gluts. She reminded me of a younger Carrie Fisher for some reason. I do have this photo of Linda giving me the palm for trying to snap her photo. The "Blair Bitch Project" parody film was pretty good in the parody department, it captured the spirit of the original well.

Traci Lords charged $20 to be photographed with her, and $20 for an autographed glossy photo that she had on her table. I was the "photographer" for 2 of my friends (I opted not to pay the $20 for the modelling fee). I was sort of nervous that my shots would not come out okay for them, and they'd be out $40 for the 2 photo ops, but we got the film developed, and they turned out okay, and they even got them blown up to 8"x10" size, and went back and got Traci to personalize the photos. They seemed very pleased. I didn't realize how big a fan my friends were of Traci's, they handled over the $20's like it was nothing. I have some sick pervs for friends...

On the Traci experience, I got the impression that she was genuinely pretty nice. As the crazed con-goer, I was one of the first people in line. One of her handlers had come by while we were in line and made it clear that we weren't supposed to speak about the huge white elephant and noted that it would be $20 for photos. However, he was a little late getting to the table when she finally arrived, and she was more than willing to pose for photos. Everyone in line before me got a picture with her for free. I think it was her handler that was trying to exploit her popularity, because she really didn't seem to care.

On the money thing ... I've grown to not have much of a problem paying the stars for things. It's what supports them to come to the con, and I don't mind paying them for it. I like the fact that I only pay the people I'm interested in. I pay $35 to attend the whole convention which barely covers the cost of my program and processing my attendance. I have so much fun and gain so much from the experience that I feel fine paying $20 to some of the stars. I won't pay $20 for a simple photo with anyone, though. I also won't pay Nichelle Nichols $40 to sign something. I think she was also charging $20 to get a photo with her. I laugh at any star who says you can take a picture of her but not with her. Get over yourself. Who wants to just take a picture of you.

One of the things Julie Caitlin Brown said that I didn't think of was this: cons give these actors and actresses the freedom to not take shitty roles just to support their families. Unless they're a huge star, they cannot make a career out of it, but that little extra income is the difference between having to do soft pr0n on Skinemax to pay for the kids' clothes and waiting for a better role to come along. Considering how much some of these stars entertain me throughout the convention (and for years on television), it doesn't bother me in the least to toss a few bucks their way when they come to my town. Hell, those B5 panels are entertaining enough to charge admission on their own.

I'm trying to figure out who I'd pay to get a photo taken with them, and I'm coming up blank. But people are people, and we are all different. My friends have no problems ponying up the cash for a photo of them with their favorite celebs, I just don't care enough to want to fork over the moola for the same thing (But I'm a cheap bastich). Then again, I have problems paying for artist sketches, but I understand the economics of the situations.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Kent McCord in person (Loved Adam-12 when I was a kid). Lou Ferrigno was nice enough to flash me a smile when I was snapping his photo. Julie Caitlin Brown is also good about flashing a smile if she's cognizant of you. She's good at the promotional aspect of attending cons (she has to be since she does a lot with getting these celebs to show up at conventions). She was doing well considering she's 6 months pregnant, and 41 years old. I was shocked that she's pregnant since she's got a teenage son already from an earlier marriage. I thought Julia Nickson was very nice, I'd say thanks for letting me snap her photo and she'd say "you're welcome." with a smile. Teryl Rothery was also nice.
Armin Shimerman was also nice and happy to have his photo taken. He had lots of children come up to his table.

Some celebs are good about that, and some just go on with their business or just turn away and hide. People are people. I don't hold a grudge either way.

I didn't realized it was $40 for Nichelle Nichols' signature. Wow! but she's TOS, and the price is obviously set by the market demands for her signature, so I don't have a beef.

BTW, I also thought Traci was very down to earth, and she probably does have something upstairs, and was very well spoken (I just wished the technical/audio help would have fixed the volume problem on her microphone sooner rather than later because it was hard to hear her speak at her panel for the 1st 20 minutes). Visually, she's pretty stunning, with legs to die for (she's a runner, hates gyms).

Oh, a funny Sarah Douglas (Ursa from Superman I and II) moment. My friend and I were in the walk of fame area, and noticed Sarah was hiding behind one of the square pillar/supports in the room. Her trusty assistant was sitting at her table, giving her signs that some wacko fan was loitering in front of her table for the past 2 hours, and it was getting unbearable for her (how much can you talk to a stranger about for 2 hours before getting tired of the whole encounter). Finally, after Sarah hid for 25 minutes, the wacko fan decided to walk away from her table, and the assistant flashed Sarah the "all clear" signal. Sarah was talking to us just to allieve the boredom of waiting it out with the wacko.

Sarah was also good with flashing a smile if she was in the mood for it.

Peter Mayhew just sits there, so does Dave Prowse. Kenny Baker was better about it, Jeremy Bulloch tends to ignore the photos, so does Richard Hatch, but Herbert Jefferson loves flashing the thumbs-up sign for photogs. Virginia Hey was pretty much covered up by her fans for the most part. Lani Tupu was nice, and so was Lisa Wilcox. David Naughton was spotted by me to be drinking a diet Coke (I didn't make the obvious (but lame) Dr. Pepper joke), but he was nice too. Phil Morris was very cool.

Kent McCord was absolutely fascinating in his panel. There were only about 20 of us in the room, and we were all completely fixed on every word he said. I went up to him the next morning to tell him how much I enjoyed it. As I walked away, I heard some lady saying, "Mr. McCord, I just wanted to tell you how much we loved your panel yesterday." He talked about anything and everything but Farscape, and he has led a very interesting life. I would love to see him talk again.

All the ladies were incredibly nice this year. Teryl has a gorgeous smile and was so friendly the whole time. I saw her wandering around the hotel countless times, and we stood in line together waiting to buy a muffin one morning for breakfast. Julia was also very nice, taking time to really talk to people. I couldn't tell how genuinely interested she was in the whole convention experience, but she was definitely very professional about the whole thing, giving each person a chance to talk with her. Lisa Wilcox was also very nice (and very hot) and certainly loved talking about how great it was to kiss Jonathan Frakes.

One thing that completely surprised me was how incredibly nice Andrea Thompson was. I never particularly liked Talia, and anyone who has ever met Pat Tallman knows she's an absolute sweetheart, so I kind of expected Andrea to be a bit of a bitch. But she was fantastic, commenting repeatedly about how much fun she was having, posing for pictures like crazy and hanging out with the fans at the concerts and parties. She too was somewhat professional about the whole thing, and you could see why she was chosen as a news personality, but she was still very friendly within that professionalism. She also seemed very fond of NYPD Blue and lit up when you talked with her about it.

Armin Shimmerman is a King among men. He is the ultimate convention guest, and I have a hard time finding more respect for anyone than him. The guy really does go the extra mile on every front. Not only are his autographs the least expensive in the house, he takes time to really interact with the fans and talk with them about anything. He's the first one to the autograph room and the last one the leave, and he's an incredible speaker. My fondest memory of the 35th Anniversary Celebration was him showing up at the after party and doing Shakespeare and singing with Max Grodenchek. Neither had to attend, but they did it because they love to entertain the fans. He really is wonderful, especially -- like you said -- to the children that come to meet Quark.

Coming in second was likely Peter Jurasik, who also was overwhelmingly friendly to the fans and was there prompty when the Walk of Fame opened and didn't leave until time to close. He also interacted in detail with the fans and showed genuine appreciation for the whole thing. It was an honor to talk with him.

On Nichelle: her autograph prices were $30 for crappy/blurry photos, $40 for the nice ones, and $50 for one from the Original Series. I just averaged it out. Regardless, I think it was too much.

On the money issue, I really don't mind paying when I get something. If someone entertains me, I have no problem paying them for it. For example, I have two Stephen Austin autographs. Who's Stephen Austin? Who cares? Well, he's nice and he's funny and he has entertained me at every con where I've seen him. He deserves a little something for that effort. Had I paid a lot of money to attend, I'd be much more hesitant, but at $35 for admission, I can afford to pay for the entertainment.

The Star Wars guys don't seem too into it. I think they may be a little unhappy that other stars get more attention. Kenny Baker and his wife were very friendly. Peter Mayhew seems pretty nice but reserved. Dave Prowse is a prickly old man and not the biggest fan of Luca$. Jeremy Bulloch and his wife were very nice to me last year and remember me each time I see them. I think he's just a very subdued person.

Virginia Hey kind of annoys me. She's a spaz and then gets really tense and frustrated. She'll start 15 conversations with people and then claim that everyone's tugging at her for attention. I know some people who work with her on various things, and they say she's a pretty frail person emotionally. It shows if you stand near her table long enough, and sometimes it makes you uneasy. She's very good to the fans, though, and that's nice to see.

Lani Tupu was a little uneasy with the autograph thing, but he was wonderful on his panels. His solo panel was very entertaining, and I think he was more comfortable when just talking with people instead of taking their money.

Phil Morris was the King of Cool throughout the entire convention. He was staggeringly entertaining during his panels and was thrilled with each person who came to his autograph table. As a self-proclaimed comic geek, he really got into the whole convention thing and completely identified with why we were there in the first place. He said it was his sister's raving about how much fun she had last year that made him decide to come. I hope he returns.

Robert Picardo seemed stuffy to me, but Ethan Phillips was nicer, and had the crowd laughing alot in his panel. Didn't even realize McCord had a panel (but you can only do so much at Dragon Con). I had a point on Saturday where I tried hitting everything I wanted to sample in the afternoon, and was one tired puppy walking all over the Hyatt to get to all the different panels.

I also thought Andrea Thompson was nice and friendly to those who came up to speak with her. And she looked so much better with the hairstyle at the convention, vs. what she was sporting while on CNN/HN. Jurasik is a loud personality, and has an infectiousness friendliness (though I didn't really try talking to him - not much to say, I guess), but David Alan Brooks seems pretty quiet, but was always giving Theryl Rothery neck rubs whenever I was walking by (I may even have a shot of that).

Jason Carter and Richard Biggs were the redheaded step children of the Walk of Fame because they were placed just outside that fame area, and into the dealer's section. I never get a good vibe from Stephen Austin when he sits at his table, so I never approach him, but he's very funny on the B5 panel.

Speaking of which, if any of you are B5 fans, you should attend one of these cons that have a menagerie of B5 stars for the massive B5 panel which is always a great time for all of the B5 fans. The B5 alumni do seem to have a great comraderie and have fun together, and it shows. Katsulas and Jurasik are fun to watch as they bag on each other throughout the hour (they played G'Kar and Londo, respectively, on B5).

Picardo did seem strangely stuffy this time. I've seen him before multiple times, and he's always friendly and hanging out with the fans. This time, however, he was kind of stand-offish. Phillips and I had a good laugh, and you can consider me responsible for all the joking names he had on the Benson photo.

Andrea Thompson does look a lot better in person, and I don't think she photographs too well. Her cheek bones seem too strong in her photos. Maybe that's good for auditioning for strong female leads, but I like her better in person.

David Allen Brooks was very quiet, and I thought he might be an ass or something, but when I talked with him, I could tell he was just a vulnerable artist. He was very nice and very willing to talk about how passionate he is for his artwork and how much he learned from the character of Max.

Biggs and Carter were strange this year. They weren't invited to the event (God knows why, since they bring the house down), so they flew out on their own dime. This explains why they were technically in the Dealer's Room instead of the Walk of Fame. They were very late to the Whose Line? event and the B5 panel as well. Still, when they were on stage, they stole the show as always.

Stephen Austin is really cool, but he's a smart-ass (he's a stand-up comic - what do you expect). Obviously, the two of us get along well.

The running joke for the whole convention was how Babylon 5 once again took over everything. Dragon*Con gave them the smallest rooms, and they packed the hell out of them, leaving hundreds of fans stuck in hall listening to every word. I don't know how many non-B5 panels I went to where the discussion quickly descended into B5 discussion. There was a Star Trek panel that was almost completely B5 and a Farscape panel that somehow turned into a B5 discussion. When will Dragon*Con learn that not only is the show not dead, but its fanbase is ever increasing? I guess it's been about 2.5 years now since I publicly made the statement "In 10 years, B5 will be as big as Star Trek." People still think I'm crazy when I say that, but I'm looking less and less crazy each day.

Damn, I forgot about that B5 panel in the sardine can. I was late for that one, and stood outside for a few minutes before deciding it just wasn't worth it, so I left. Didn't realize Carter and Biggs weren't invited (where's the sense in that?), but was wondering why Carter wasn't at the Buffy panel (villains) with Robin Sachs. That would have been cool, though Sach did as well as he could with the crowd (but he was having to contend with a baby that wouldn't shut up - Robin's response each time was "Feed it!")

Dragon Con really does need to get a clue when it comes to sizing the rooms for B5 panels. You need at least a room big enough like Centennial 1. If Jeff Conaway can fill Cent. 1 a few years ago, you know you can fill up that sized room with any B5 panel.

Also, I've forgotten to mention Tracey Scoggins, who was also looking great, and was extremely personable and nice to the folks who showed up at her table (she was around the corner from Traci Lords, though). Scoggins looked great in her bespectacled librarian look on Monday.

I was wondering why the other B5 folks weren't on the 10 a.m. Monday panel in Cent. 2-3 (Scoggins, Nickson, Carter, Biggs), but they already had 6 B5 on there (Jurasik, Austin, Katsulas, Thompson, Brown and Brooks).

Centennial I should be the place for all B5 panels except the later ones which should get the II-III treatment. Carter wasn't at the Buffy panel, because he was passed out somewhere. It was a miracle that they revived him to make it in time for the Whose Line? panel. In answer to the final question, Carter and Biggs left on Sunday, Scoggins bolted Monday morning, and I think Nickson wasn't there since she had already been on at least 4 panels and would also be doing the TNG guest stars panel at 1:00pm. I guess they wanted to give her a break to check out and stuff for Monday's flight.

Part of the problem is that tracks like Buffy claim they pack a room and need the space. Well, yeah, they fill the seats and have some people standing. Whoopdie-freakin-doo. It's a paradise in there compared to what happens when B5 shows up. Standing Room Only is an understatement, as hundreds of people get turned away and probably a hundred more stand in the hallway just listening in. People sitting in the isles. People standing along the walls. People crammed into the back. Hell, next year, I expect people to suspend themselves from the ceiling to pack more in there.

Something else I thought of (in case anyone is actually reading this thread): there was a definite undertone of disgust with the Sci-Fi Channel throughout the whole Con. There were numerous panels devoted to where the channel got off the tracks, and many questions were preceeded with "Since the Sci-Fi Channel sucks now ..."
