X-Files Episode BEFORE the series started?

I didnt watch The X-Files when it was originally aired, but have since been watching the entire series as I buy the box sets. Recently, I was watching my local FOX affiliate, and they were airing a syndicated episode of the show. From what I could tell, the story took place BEFORE the series began (one date was December 25, 1991). I want to know when this episode aired (and also which box set it is/or will be in).

Did it have the Lone Gunman in it?

I just did a quick search for the one episode I recalled that guest stared Darren Macgavin and took place mostly before the x-files was formed. The episode is Travelers and takes place mostly in 1990 with flashbacks to 1952. Could this be it? It's a season 5 episode so it's in the season 5 set that's out already, if this is the correct show, that is.

The episode is entitled "Unusual Suspects" This deals primarily with the Lone Gunmen. Scully is not in the episode. Mulder is first introduced to the government conspiracy with the help of the Gunmen. Also, there is a hilarious cameo by comedian Richard Belzer as the man interrogating the Gunmen. The episode first aired in Season 5 on November 16 1997.

IIRC he was playing John Munch. His character from Homicide/L&O:SUV.

Hmmm...not sure if thats it or not (and if its in Season 5, I wont watch it till I get to it). But I dont remember seeing the Lone Gunmen in it (in the short part I saw), but only Cigarette-Smoking Man and Deep Throat and MAYBE X.
Oh well...I got thinking of this because when I first started watching the first episode of Season 3, I almost wondered if that was it...but it wasnt. I will find out eventually I guess...thanks

There was another episode set in the very early nineties, chronicling Cigarette Smoking Man before the beginnings of the X-Files proper... I don't remember too much, but it involved him submitting a short story to some magazine. Maybe that was it?
