sopranos question

I remember reading somewhere that the Sopranos was originally planned for 4 seasons. Meanwhile, I read this week that 5 are planned. I was curious if it's always been 5 or if David Chase changed his mind on the matter. And, if he did, why? Thanks.

HBO backed a dump truck full of money up to his house. That's why it's been so long between Seasons 3 and 4. He didn't want to start filming 4 until he also had 5 written.

Any idea when season 5 will come out? Will it be another 16 months?

''Sopranos'' may hit the big screen. HBO mulls a feature film for Tony's family after the series ends its TV run

by Gary Susman

''The Sopranos'' creator David Chase reaffirmed a few days ago that he doesn't want to write a sixth season of the show, and cast members James Gandolfini and Lorraine Bracco indicated that they'd leave when Chase does. Still, ''Sopranos,'' whose fourth season debuts in September, may live on beyond five seasons, if not on the small screen, then in a theatrical feature, the New York Times reports.

Chris Albrecht, the president of HBO Original Programming, broached the movie idea on Monday at the TV critics summer gathering in Pasadena. ''When 'The Sopranos' is no longer a series, one thing we have talked about is the idea of doing a theatrical version,'' Albrecht told the Times. ''We are very interested in exploring it when the time is right.''

''I would be very interested in that,'' Chase said of the movie idea. ''My problem creatively is the kids: How old will they be, and all that.'' Both Robert Iler, who plays A.J., and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who plays Meadow, would be college-aged or older by the time a ''Sopranos'' movie could go into production. ''And also, if you want to do flashbacks, you don't have Livia,'' Chase said, referring to Tony's mother, played by the late Nancy Marchand. ''It's tough.''
