ER, the show, question
I know it's not a movie or dvd for that matter... not sure you guys/gals remember this scene. what does it mean to put rings (maybe wedding rings) on the birthday cake (or maybe the candles). I saw this ritual in one of the ER episodes, nurse Carol's surprise birthday party (George Cloony is still in the show back then).
I asked around, it seems that the ring and cake ritual is a made up ... |
Maybe it's some strange way that ER workers propose to one another? Perhaps an Illinois custom?

Originally posted by Ocelot I know it's not a movie or dvd for that matter... Unfortunately, I don't even remember the scene you are talking about, so I can't help. But again, TV Talk would be your best bet if you're looking for people who watch this show religiously. |
A. This really belongs in the TV Talk part of the forum.
B. Not sure if this is analagous, but there's an old tradition of putting prizes in cakes, along the lines of party favors. http://www.birthdayexpress.com/bexpr...lebrations.asp Another old tradition still practiced by some English people is to make a birthday cake with symbolic objects baked inside. In medieval times, objects such as coins and thimbles were mixed into the batter. People believed that the person who got the coin would be wealthy, while the unlucky finder of the thimble would never marry. Today, small figures, fake coins and small candies are more common. Guests are warned ahead of time as well, so no one injuries their teeth or swallows a tiny treasure. |
i sent this question to one of those hoax or urban legend site for confirmation or at least some explanation, but no answers yet (maybe never...) From the sound of it, it's a fun ritual, i wonder i should try this on my friend's birthday, she's not married, but i am...
