Jerry Dunphy is dead

Jerry Dunphy, the news anchor on Channel 9 in L.A. has died. The anchors at KCAL 9 are barely holding back their tears on the air.

edit- Come to think of it, i guess this belongs in the TV Talk forum, someone please move this thread. Thanks.

Is this the guy who looks like David Letterman's twin?

I just saw the kcal newscast and Pat Harvey had a tough time holding back her tears. It is sad to see him gone but he apparently had a long and full life and was loved by many. I will miss his "From the dessert to the sea to all of California" greeting :(

Jerry did like 40 years here in California doing the news. If I remember right he used to be on Channel 4. Just one of those names that when you hear it, you think of home.

Sad to hear this news. I'm 32 and I never knew a time in the Southland without Dunphy.

Does anyone remember when he was shot by the thugs?

I remember that, he was hit in the neck I think, they thought he was going to die. Tells you how much on an icon he was in SoCal when all the newschannels are running his obit.

He has been in the anchorman's chair on an almost daily basis in Los Angeles since 1960, when he started with KNXT-TV and enjoyed wide success on its groundbreaking "Big News" broadcast.

One of the highest paid anchors on local TV news, Jerry was reputedly the model for the Ted Baxter character in the old "Mary Tyler Moore Show." The anchorman on the animated television series "The Simpsons" also appeared to be have been modeled after him.

In addition to his stints on Channels 2, 7 and 9, he had appeared in a dozen movies, most recently "Bulworth" in 1998, and in numerous TV shows.
He spent 15 years with KNXT, later KCBS-TV, before moving on to KABC-TV in 1975.

He remained there for 14 years, until joining KCAL-TV in July 1989, a few months before the new Disney-owned, stand-alone with the just-minted call letters -- it had been KHJ -- went on the air. The station later was sold to Young Broadcasting, which last week closed the sale of KCAL to media giant Viacom Inc.

In 1993, Jerry was presented the Los Angeles Area Governors Emmy Award for long-time excellence in broadcasting.
It would go alongside his considerable collection of other local Emmys and Golden Mikes, and other accolades he had gathered over the decades, including the Joseph M. Quinn Memorial Award from the Greater Los Angeles Press Club.

He "was" Kent Brockman and he will be missed.

Can you believe he was 80 years old! What do some of these guys do to still look so young.

During my time in LA, he was also known to be the news himself. Back in the early 80s, his heart surgery was covered by channel 7 and a few years later, he was a victim of a gun shot while driving (or being driven) to the studio for a broadcast.

He will be missed.
