No more Politically Incorrect in 6 weeks

You may have already heard, but ABC has cancelled Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. Tonight (5/17) he comments on the cancellation and Zap2It has the story and his comments:
http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?25983

Too bad ABC didn't have the guts to keep this show alive. Whether you agree or disagree with Maher, he at least made viewers think about the issues.

They should put the show on HBO....I loved to watch it, but there were just too many commercials

ten41 05-18-02 12:49 AM

" So when people say, why don't you run for office? Or, why'd you get fired? Folks, let me sum it up for you: I think religion is bad and drugs are good. I think America causes cancer, longevity is less important than fun, and young people should be discouraged from voting.

"I think stereotypes are true, abstinence is a perversion, Bush's lies are worse than Clinton's and there's nothing sexy about being old or pregnant.

" I think September 11th changed nothing, and if I had known the onset of war would add 100 points to George Bush's IQ, I would have started one.

"I think pornography stops rape, AIDS ribbons are stupid, and flag burning makes me feel patriotic.

" I think death is not the worst thing that can happen to you, people have too much self-esteem, and being drunk is funny. I think children are not innocent, God doesn't write books, and Jesus wasn't a Republican.

"I'm for Mad Cow disease and against suing tobacco companies.

" I think girls hate each other, no doesn't always mean no, you have to lie to stay married, women's sports are boring and the Olympics are gay.

"We'll be on for another six weeks."

- Bill Maher

I miss him already

no kidding! there was more commercial time than show time.

and what's really sad is he's being replaced by that idiot jimmy kimmel.

dolphinboy 05-18-02 01:48 AM

i agree with most everything listed but the women's sports is boring part. women give it their all more than we men do and they look really good running and sweating. mia hamm, brandi chastain, and all those yummy soccer girls. who care if anna kournikova wins as long as we can keep seeing her bending over from behind as she waits to return serve. there are even quite a few hot women golfers that aren't lesbians. bill, you need to revise your thoughts on women's sports. :)

it would be sad if bill maher just gives this show up. i don't think it's old or has run its course. the hbo thing would be nice or take the show to fox. why would abc even cancel this show? is it on in different times in other places? it's on against the second half of Letterman here. I can't think of anything that would do better against the Late Show and I know a lot of people who like it. In fact, other than to watch Alias or NYPD Blue, PI was the only other reason I watched ABC at all.

Bill Maher is an idiot. I'm glad I won't be seeing that egg-shaped dome head of his anymore. The only cool thing about him was his love for animals.

Ha! Lame. Bill Maher is cool. Makes people think. Expresses opinions that aren't pap. Bucks the mainstream. Files in the face of the establishment.

His show will be missed. It's a rare thing in America that people actually use their right to free speach. Too bad there aren't more people like Bill around.

I'm all for voicing opinions that fly in the face of mainstream. Problem is Maher is a lousy speaker, has problems making his point clear, goes off on tangents too often and often talks like a 15-year-old boy. Whenever there would be some serious intelligent discussion on his program, just wait a few seconds and some stupid guest, a comedian or sitcom star, will ruin it with a lame joke then bam!! yet another friggin commercial. I stand by my opinion that Maher is an idiot and his show is dumbed down for the masses.

Josh-da-man 05-18-02 06:08 AM

I shall miss Bill Maher. I can't say I always agreed with everything that came out of his mouth -- especially when he was espousing borderline mysogyny, but I agree with him on a lot of things.

I also say move it to HBO. Hey, Bill and the guests can cuss, too.

atlantamoi 05-18-02 06:14 AM

I actually disagree with just about every quote from above. But, I would have watched his show a lot more if it had been on the air at an earlier hour. I have no problem with him speaking his mind (even if he really ticked me off at times). He usually had some fascinating guests lined up during a show. That part I will miss.

Sparrow 05-18-02 09:11 AM

I'll miss the colorful panel of celebrities. Sometimes he had some characters with some very interesting opinions that were either based on fact or some times it seemed as if they made it up! :D

The show was hit or miss based on the panel of folks, but I watched just to see what was going to be discussed (not often but sometimes).

elektra 05-18-02 09:24 AM

At least on HBO they might be able to get it back to the way it was on Comedy Central. I'd like to have it back to back with Dennis Miller Live.

You don't have to like Bill, but appreciate the fact that he made people think and talk about issues we might normally ignore or take for granted.

MrN 05-18-02 10:25 AM

I used to watch the show back when it was on CC, when they repeated it on Sunday mornings. 2 hours of PI.

Now its on too late for me to make an effort. Shows like this need to be repeated, maybe on a sister-channel to make it convenient to more viewers. I mean, they make tv shows for people to watch right?

 Dennis Miller does what Maher used to do: poke fun at everyone.

Those were the days when the show really was politically incorrect. Now, when he makes a politically incorrect comment, he balances it by bashing someone on the right or kissing Clinton's ass. On CC he seemed to care a lot less about what people on either side of an issue thought about him.

ziggy 05-18-02 10:58 AM

Politically, Mahar and I are just about in sync, but sometimes he just says offensive things for the sake of offensiveness, I think - which isn't exactly my speed; if I'm offensive it is 'cause I didn't know I was being offensive, or because I'm trying to make a point.

If the show was on HBO, I'd watch it all the time - hell I'd probably tape it.

elektra 05-18-02 11:44 AM

What I've been liking about Miller is that he bashes the current administration, but when they do something right, he also acknowledges it. And he will still take the shots at previous administrations as well.

Actually, though the Bush people would prefer you didn't know it there are plenty of people on the public scene that do the exact same thing. Unfortunatly they're branded unpatriotic and pushed down by an administration that has too much support and too little shame.

Check out Michael Moore's latest book Stupid White Men. Great read. Moore is much more left leaning than Maher but he sure doesn't let Clinton/Gore off the hook either.

mariakitty 05-18-02 12:09 PM

What about a block of Michael Moore followed by Bill Maher? Now that would be a treat :) Too bad the networks would never allow it to happen, but there is always cable.

I like the idea of moving the show to HBO, except that would require me to subscribe to HBO. $10/month to watch PI and Sopranos just isn't worth it. Maybe it could go back to Comedy Central??

elektra 05-18-02 12:59 PM

Yea, there's a lot of people that didn't/don't like TV Nation or The Naked Truth, either.

I've never condsidered it unpatriotic to make fun of or question our adminstration. I just also appreciate it when the same people point out they agree with something they've said or done.

What's interesting is that Maher and I believe Miller too, are both for profiling when it comes to solving the terrorist problem. That sounds fairly conservative, or am I wrong?

Yeah, I can't believe some of the things I've heard Miller say in his last few shows. I think he just gets excited and starts saying things he doesn't really mean. I remember him saying that even he couldn't believe some of the things that were coming out of his mouth.

Aaron Amos 05-18-02 09:29 PM

Darn. This sucks. I do not always agree with him or his guests but at least the show made people aware of the issues and think about them. Now what they going to do at ABC? An hour of "nightline" with Ted Koppell? I wish some other network would pick it up (F/X.Fox.NBC etc..)

This is what I like about Dennis Miller. He's seems to be more an equal opportunity offender. Bill Maher was once like that. However, since I haven't seen him much recently, I can't say for sure that he isn't now.

As for Michael Moore, I really liked TV Nation. I didn't agree with much of it, but funny is funny, regardless of politics. Too few comedians understand this, and just rank on politicians because of the letter behind their name.

wm lopez 05-19-02 09:20 AM

Put it on FOX NEWS cable channel, but ditch the live audiance.
They could put it up againest CNN's TALKBACK LIVE.

Jack Straw 06-02-02 02:11 AM

"So beyond 35, the eggs are toast"

Bill Maher commenting on the recent reports that women have been misled about how much time they really have before their body's biological clock makes having children less possible.

Darren Garrison 06-02-02 09:03 AM

Great parody on Mad TV last night.
