HBO's Telling Nicholas
Even though there's a link at the top of the page I thought I'd point out my piece about HBO's upcoming Telling Nicholas, an extremely moving film about the effects of 9/11 on a Staten Island family. It's a hard movie to watch and has real emotional rawness, but I really strongly recommend it to everyone.

Saw a promo for this. It looks quite powerful.

I was impressed by this documentary and would encourage others who missed it to catch it when HBO re-airs it.
I also was amazed that the filmmakers were given access by the families so soon after the tragedy occurred. I can't imagine I would have allowed a stranger (with a camera) into my life at such a painful time. It's programs like this that make HBO the most indispensible channel I have. |
My understanding from speaking with Nicholas' grandfather, was that there wasn't much of a decision process at all. Whitney just sort of showed up and they were all so worried about Michele that they didn't even think about him or his camera. Once they were in a position to think about that stuff he had pretty much become part of their lives and they were comfortable with him and his fillming. They are very brave people to open their lives and pain up like that.

Great film. I feel terrible for Nicholas as he has a (former)deadbeat bible-thumping dad and a new-age psychotic aunt in Susan.
