Did Third Watch catch a virus from the ER crossover?

Since the crossover episode Third Watch is now widescreen. I wonder if the crossover was a gimmick to slide that by without people noticing so much?

Whatever virus it caught, it was a good one.
NBC today picked the series up for another full season.
