MTV's Back to the Hood
This MTV show was about the 1992 L.A. riots 10 years later.
I've witnessed qualified black people get passed over for promotions at the work place, the company would hire a outside white who has to be trained by the black who was passed over. So having said that, I agree black people still get a raw deal in the U.S.. But this is one thing where I and the rest of the races won't agree with blacks. They showed where a Koreaon woman shop owner was hit by a female robber, so the shop owner killed the robber. The whole black community backed the robber. They even showed Snoop Doggy Dogg say the shop owner should have been sent to jail. I'm sure if some lootters break into Snoop's home he's gonna turn the other cheek. And of course Rodney King was speeding in a residendutal neighborhood and so the cops beat his butt. Now if Rodney had run over some black kids while speeding would the black community & the parents of the dead kids have told the cops to stop beating Rodney King your violating his human rights? |
I think the store video was released, and showed that the shop owner shot the robber in the back after the robber hit her and was leaving the store. Robbery is bad, but shooting someone when they are not a threat to your life is not good.
|
Was the robber packin' heat? If so, the store owner's life was in danger.
|
The person shot in the back of the head was NOT a robber and had no weapons. It was a 15 year old girl who had an orange juice in her backpack and turned to show the shopkeeper before paying for the $1.79 item. The shopkeeper grabbed her, the girl shoved/punched her back and she turned to walk out and then the shopkeeper grabbed the gun and shot the 15 year old in the back of the head. Both people were in the wrong but I see no reason why someone needs to be shot in the back of the head even if they are taking an item worth $1.79. The shopkeeper got off with probation and a $500 fine and some community service. I don't know about you but if your 15 year old daughter/sister/friend was shot in the head I would think you would want a little stiffer punishment then a slap on the wrist.
|
I don't know about you but I know none of us would want our mama hit by a robber and be free to waltz out the door and maybe next time be able to come back and do worse. So look at the whole picture not the race. Put yourself on both sides. If you want your mama hit with a left jab and feel that's fine. But a good hit to the head can kill a woman. This country could be better if people would stop backing thugs just because they are of the same race.
|
Wow, the amount of ignorance in both of yours posts is staggering. I NEVER mentioned race in my post and for you to tell me to do what you are not is very offensive. For your lack of information, I am neither of the two races involved in this unfortunate event. The 15 YEAR OLD was not a robber or a thug or a looter, she was a girl buying orange juice who according to witnesses was immediatley assumed to be a thief by the shopkeeper. If she were actually going into the store to steal the $1.79 orange juice why would she go up to the counter and show the orange juice to the shopkeeper? The 15 year old victim only punched the shopkeeper after being grabbed and was trying to get the shopkeeper off of her. For you to assume that I am siding with the African-American over the Korean-American because I am of her race is ignorant and wrong. You did see that the shopkeeper SHOT AN UNARMED 15 YEAR OLD WHEN HER BACK WAS TURNED did you not? How can you not see that this sort of act should be punished by more than a small fine and some community service?

On topic, from the posts in this thread, it's near impossible to get a good account of what happened. If the shopkeeper antagonized the customer first, got into a shoving match, and then killed her, that's murder. If the shopkeeper was attacked and feared for her life, we have self-defense or possibly some level of manslaughter. Buf if the kid was shot in the back of the head while leaving the store, I hardly think that's the case. I have no idea what really happened, but we have laws in this country for a reason. If someone punches you, you file assault charges. You don't shoot him in the back of the head while he's walking away. Same for shoplifting. Armed robbery is a far cry from shoplifting. If <B>blackbeltjones</B>' account of the story is true, then consider the reverse. Girl goes into a store and pays for orange juice. Shopkeeper shorts her on change by $1.79. Girl gets angry and says, "where's my money, bitch!" Shopkeeper smacks her and tells her to get the hell out of the store. Girl whips out a gun and kills the shopkeeper. Essentially the same thing. das |
I'll make clear. If my mama is working at 7-11 store, I'll tell her to do whatever you have to do so you come home safe. And the same goes for my dad if he was a cop or a brother who is a soldier at a Isreal check point. There their to do their job if someone wants to commit a crime then they suffer the consequenses. Now if you disagree with this then your more worried about the thugs civil rights than your mama's safty, better your cop dad dead then a thug, and of course don't do any profiling on the terrorist because they will protest.

Our laws in this country are meant to protect us both from the "thugs" you've so broadly labeled <I>and</I> vigilanties like yourself who advocate murdering someone over a case of alleged shop-lifting. If everyone had your perspective, your beloved mother or father or brother would be in more danger than they are in now as people would be killing each other left and right for whatever activities they personally deemed "suspicious" in their mind. das |
Snoop Doggy Dogg was all upset that the woman who killed the thief got off. Well, Snoop got off if you remember from a murder charge. He didn't say "naw throw my butt in jail". It seems because the thief was black and the shopkeeper was Koreon that he's on the thief's side. Because if we go by Snoop's action, movies, rap music there's no doubt that Snoop's for "payback". So do you think if that was Snoop's mama getting hit in the face he would have the same feelings for the thief? Will Smith and Snoop Dogg are both black but have different character. So having pointed that out, that just took me off the racsist label anyone may want to hang on me! Yuk! Yuk!

It seems like your issue is not with the crime, but with the fact that the shopowner was Korean and the shopper was Black. Moreover you assume that Snoop's desire to have a murderer thrown in jail is based solely on race because he's also Black? Whatever makes it easier to justify your prejudice, I guess. das BTW, Snoop's career is built much more on smokin' dope and chillin' with his homies than "payback" |

Can we talk about the show for a minute?
WTF kind of show is this anyway? I have been an MTV critic for a while... someone should make them take the M out of their name as it is rapidly becoming false advertising- No music at all... but back to this show, what is the point of it? Re-open old wounds? Celebrate destruction and death? Make celebrities out of people who pull people from their vehicles and beat them practically to death because of their race? That was my favorite part of the show when they interviewed the guy that held Reginald Denny down while the others beat him. "Yeah, man, this intersection right here was crazy, people getting pulled out of their vehicles and stuff." YEAH, BY YOU! Ridiculous. Anyway, the whole tone I got from the show was that if you got your business burned down, or looted, or you were pulled from a car and beaten, you got what was coming to you, especially if you were Korean. Everyone of course made the obligatory, oh, I know it's not right BUT statement. Anyway, sorry for the rant... I just don't see the value of this show... maybe I am missing something. |
It scares me to the level of ignorance some people display. First of all you keep labeling this girl as a thug how do you know anything about her character? Second there is video tape evidence of her being grabbed hitting the store clerk and then she is shot in the BACK of her head. That is not self defense my friend, that is murder plain and simple. Even if it was "my mama" who got hit the face I would not can not and WILL NOT condone her taking anyone's life when hers is not in danger.
And as far as the Snoop case for the record his BODYGUARD shot Phillip W. not Snoop. Lastely your blanket statements about blacks really annoy me. If someone does something wrong they get no support from me just because they are black. I am trying really hard to believe that you are not an ignorant and uniformed person but your post do not make it easy. |
Originally posted by YellowLedbetter ... I just don't see the value of this show... maybe I am missing something. What pisses me the most is that some people have the nerve to call it an "Uprising" uprising from what? They did nothing but destroy and terrorize and afterwards made empty efforts to change things. |
Thank you tsohg!
For those of you who don't agree with me go right now and tell your mother that if she was working the counter of a store and a teenage girl came in to shoplift and she tried to stop her and then the shoplifter bashed her in the face . And that if mommy took the gun from behind the counter and shot the thief you would support the thief. And post what your mom says back to you her loving child. |

"Well, if I did, then I would hope you'd visit me in prison and still love me in spite of my horrifying actions." And I would. Forgive the odd pun, but things aren't as black and white as you make them. And trying to justify murder by absurd "well, if it were your mother" stipulations is ... well ... absurd. Mixing the emotions of love for a mother with committing murder is a lame (and hardly effective) attempt to confuse the issue. Like others have said, you can justify your sense of morality to yourself however you like ... that's your right (unless you commit a crime based on that morality) ... but don't be surprised if the rest of us shake our heads in disbelief. das |

One thing we havn't considered and is mentioned in the show is that those buisness are their living. Stealing anything from their store comes out of their pocket. Which explains the action the shop keeper took. It's not like if any of us working at a 7-11 and a robber comes in we'll all say here take the money thank you and come again just let me live. When it's our buisness it's like someone stealing from our home. And at the end of the show they show the buisness havn't been replaced. And the people in the hood also say they would riot again. And I am a hispanic which means I'm a minority which means I know how to play the race card. So I can't be racsist. I heard blacks say they can't be racsists because they are not in power. Last time I looked hispanics are not in power in America. I know it's rare that minorities don't stand up for thugs. In Chicago last year a hispanic teen shot and killed a white cop. The hispanic neighborhood or liberial civil rights groups didn't march at the youth's home. The white cop was in a no win situation if he kills the teen with the gun he's fired for being a racsist cop. He didn't fire so he wound up dead. What would you tell your dad to do in this situation?

America, aint it grand!? I'm not saying that applies to this situation, which is probably a case of assault on one of the two parties, but I've always enjoyed that commentary on all the senseless killing in today's culture. You look at someone funny or cut them off in traffic, and they think that's worthy of taking a human life? We've become a nation of complacent pussies. We file non-stop frivilous law suits for anything that doesn't go our way, or maybe we just skip the middle man and kill those who make us angry. And when we kill someone, who's to blame? The government ... or maybe television ... or maybe those damn_whites, or those damn_blacks, or my 3rd grade teacher ... or Woody Allen films ... or Shakepeare ... anyone ... ANYONE ... but the person truly responsible: me. The greatest drawback of our freedom is that we invariably take it for granted. das |
Originally posted by wm lopez And I am a hispanic which means I'm a minority which means I know how to play the race card. So I can't be racsist. And the fact that some idiots may riot over something is hardly a justification that the opposing situation must therefore be acceptable. Yes, it sucks that convenient store owners get robbed, often at gunpoint. And when someone threatens your life, you have to do whatever you can to survive, including taking their life if necessary. But shooting a 15 year old kid in the back of the head, who may or may not have been attempting to steal $1.79 in orange juice? That's not self defense. That's unconscionable. The presence of stupid people in this world is not a license to commit murder. What I want to know is this: when Winona Ryder was caught shoplifting from a clothing store (more than $1.79, I believe), why wasn't there a cashier available to shoot her in the back of the head? And as I said in a previous post, if a cashier neglects to give me the correct change on a purchase, can I shoot him in the face? Or do I have to wait until he turns around, so I can plant a bullet in the back of his head? das |
I'm sorry but a convient store is not one's home my home is private property a store is not reguardless if it's a national chain like krogers or some small mom and pop you can not try to use the same rules for two completely different environments.
My uncle owned a store once and it was in the "hood" so he was robbed from time to time and yes he has had things thrown at him but never once did he feel the need to "bust a cap in someones azz" over a bottle of juice and a sucker punch. No material object is worth killing for. You are really starting to sound as lawless as the thugs you so passionately hate. |
