Non Starring ACTORS/CHARACTERS who over Time took over a TV SHOW

Steve Urkel from Family matters jumps to mind. He was supposed to be a minor character, then just took over the show totally so it revolved around him!

Michael J Fox's Alex P Keaton in Family Ties i think also qualifies. As the series went on, Alex was more of the focus of the show

Frasier Crane from Cheers got his own show, and it has been quite successful.

Over the course of a season, Jack and Karen took over "Will & Grace".

For a while, "Seinfeld" could've been called "The Kramer Show." However, they toned it down considerably.

Kind of an obscure one, but does anyone remember the early FOX show "Duet" (1987)? Alison LaPlaca's secondary character totally took over from the lead couple, they cancelled "Duet" and gave LaPlaca's character her own show, "Open House" (1989), where one of the leads from "Duet", became a secondary character!!! (trivia - Ellen Degeneres was the secretary on "Open House", loooonnnngg before she became famous)

Sadly, I remember both of these shows vividly. Duet was a real sweet show that did a good job showing two adults stumbling through a romance. It wasn't absurd, yet it wasn't cheesy. I kinda liked it. Open House, however, was never even close to as good. I really like LaPlaca (in all 800 sit-coms she's been in), but the show lost its charm and became too "sit-com-ish" for my tastes. I think I enjoyed Keller as the leading lady more. She had a real quality to her that worked in Duet but was turned more pathetic in Open House.

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

The Simpson's was originally built around the antics of Bart, but the series quickly moved to center around Homer's foolishness.

How about Elmo? That furry menace took over Sesame Street about 3 years ago. More kids know of Elmo than Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Oscar and the other Muppets that I grew up with.

Remember The Hogan Family, originally called Valerie and then Valerie's Family?

Valerie Harper left the show entirely.

I thought of another one: I was watching some biography show on E! and they mentioned that Jennifer Lopez was on some ensemble show I'd never heard of, and they retooled the show around her character and renamed it to a new name I still never heard of. Then she left the show to star in a movie about some singer I never heard of. And the rest, as they say, is history.

And you've never heard of Selena? Shame on you.

Bullwinkle

The big moose from Frostbite Falls, MN was the sidekick to Rocky the flying Squirrel. The show was originally called 'Rocky and his Friends'.

Jackee from 227

The show started as a starring vehicle for Marla Gibbs. After a couple of Emmy wins Jackee became the show's focus.

What's more, he was only supposed to be in ONE EPISODE (about a blind date with Laura)

John Stamos' "Uncle Jesse" took over full house so much that many viewers probably thought he was Michelle's dad. Maybe rightfully so, he always seemed closer to her that Saget's character.

Don't forget A Different World. It was supposed to be about Denise Huxtable's college years but Lisa Bonet was written out and it became the Jasmine Guy show. (Personally I would've preferred the Cree Summer/Marisa Tomei college exploration show- but that's just me.)

Every gratuitous so-called guest star on Ally McBeal. Every one gets a episode i.e. Vonda Shepard, Ling, (did I see a comerical with Dame Edna?),
Though I liked the character Ling in the beginning ... she became too much as did the rest of the cast. The show isn't even at Ally anymore.
Honestly I stopped watching after Billy died.

John Stamos was the star of Full House. He got top billing.

Couple of actress's:

Heather Locklear on Dynasty. She had a short run
of like 4 eps or whatever. Then she was dumped.
I guess they got a ton mail and such.
Because she was then added as a regular.
She did that cop show with William Shatner
and Dynasty at the same time.

Also Party of Five when they added a new girlfriend
Sarah for Bailey....Anyways was Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Not that I've ever seen the show or anything... but Cody on Step by Step kind of took over the show.
