Clip Shows

The discussion on this week's "Friends" got me thinking about clip shows. You know...those shows where the characters reminiss about past events, followed by a series of clips. "Family Ties" did this to the point of ad absurbium.

Anyway, I thought everybody hated these (I know I do), but I was surprised to learn that some people like them.

What do you think?

Well, for most any television show in America, it's almost expected to have at least one clip show. Sure, it usually doesn't take the time an effort of a real episode, but as long as it's not done horribly, it's usually better than watching a rerun. For shows that have been going on for a long time, a recap of the show's history might be nice for people who haven't been with it since the beginning. And even when the show is fairly new, as long as they do a balance between the clips and new material, utilizing them to the fullest advantage, it works (e.g. Alias).

But there's no reason to have 1 or 2 clip shows every season. That's just showing laziness.

The best Clip Show ever was when Justine Bateman hosted SNL, and they did a recursive flashback episode. It was great.

Universally hate them. They exist for only one reason: the writers want to sit on their other-word-for-donkeys and NOT write anything new. Instead, they crudely toss together almost random clips, tied together with a couple of minutes of clumsy segue. (Anyone else thinking of Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man?)

I like them very much, but I am completely not surprised by the poll results, considering the cynic audiences.

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw the thread title.

South Park had a great clip episode where every clip ends differently than the origional episode. Then they all eat ice cream.

I like them when they are known to be clip shows and not disguised as new episodes or season (series) finales.
The occasional one is ok like when someone is dying or something, but I really hate when they end a show like that.

Depends, I usually enjoy The Simpsons clip shows to some extent (So It's Come to This, 138th Episode Spectacular), but occasionally they can be boring and just act as "the whole episode in 2-3 minutes" clip shows (Another Simpsons Clip Show).

Clip shows really suck..

Exceptions:
Clerks and South Park, because they make fun of them.
Revolutionary Girl Utena, well.. you'd really have to see it to understand.

I just watched the clips show from Fear Factor this weekend, and it was a good way to kill about 22 minutes while I ate. I'd seen most of them, but it was still great to watch them transfer dead rats in their mouths, while I ate lunch.

The first Simpsons clip show (hosted by Troy McClure and featuring outtakes) was pretty decent, but the others have been lame-o.

The South Park episode on the bus was a classic. When the first clip started, I was pissed because I thought they had gone with the same old tired idea everybody else does, but they surprised me once again.

Except for the Seinfeld one, they pretty much always suck. Though I sat through a MacGyver clip show about a week ago so I'm really not one to talk.

I don't mind clip shows when I catch them in syndicated reruns, because I would've probably seen whatever episode they'd be showing anyway. I just hate when they advertise "An all-new [insert show name]!" and it consists of 10% new material and 90% old crap. Maybe if they advertised "A partially new [insert show name]!"...

Usually "an all-new..." means exactly that (as well as implying that it's not a clip show).

I worry when I hear, "A very special [insert show name]" this is the first sign of a potential clip show.

BTW: does anyone know what the first series to do a clip show was? I'm thinking it's probably Family Ties or The Cosby Show.
