Ian McKellen is hosting SNL tonight!

I watch SNL whenver possible, and I did not know he was hosting tonight, but he is actually very funny. I have never seen him playing a funny character before (Apt. Pupil).

Well he is a great actor. I'm sure he can pull off any sort of character. I will be watching.

Man that is Kylie Minogue of 'Locomotion' fame. I used the restroom during her performance.

I thought Kylie was decent. Hell, at least she was really singing.

He seemed that he was very capable of good comedy. I wish that they had him try to do more comedy that was not entirely based on his sexual preference.

I don't know about you guys, but the commercial for Classic Kotex about made me pass out from laughter... then my wife told me that she found some once when she was really young and wondered what they were!

And Ian's twist as Dame Maggie Smith was priceless... especially when he went at Jimmy Fallon full on the mouth!

The Bjork cartoon was sub-par... Kylie was weird but her back up dancers certainly caught Sir Ian's attention... the Turkish bit was funny (not!)... and the comic book show was kind of funny...

... but hats off to the NPR skit... those ladies crack me up... "You can say that again..." (I want to send off for a transcript of that!)

Line of the night: "Judy. Judy Dench. Little Judy Dench. Chubby, little Judy Dench..." - Dame Maggie Smith (Ian) commenting on her choice of Best Actress this year.

That whole Ian as "Mags" was classic that is one of the best bits ever done on SNL. I couldn't stop laughing.

He was really good on the show. Charles Dickens skit was hilarious, so was that talk show skit with Sanz and Hammond

I really liked this episode -- one of the best this season. I thought Kylie was good, she looked very beautiful and she sings wonderfully live.. But then again, I like her (unlike a lot of people). The Weekend Update skit was fab, esp. Ian as Maggie. Ian is so talented, he didn't seem like he was reading line for line from the cards like most of the recent hosts -- upcoming hosts could learn a thing of two from him.

I saw her performance (well, the first one anyhow), and I'd be very surprised if she was actually singing. The synch was perfect/believable, but the sound was studio perfect.

As Tina Fey said in the Weekend News story on the pornographic Barbie™ movies:

"Audiences were really shocked when she bent over and took it in the Mattel™!"

My better judgement is keeping me from making that line my sig!

This was one of the best shows of recent memory. The "Weekend Update" skit w/ McKellen as Dame Maggie Smith was classic! It had me almost rolling on the floor. Hopefully we'lll get to see Sir Ian in a screen comedy soon....
Horatio Sanz practically salvaged that so-so Turkish talk show skit by acknowledging Hammond's dangling mustache - and making it work! You know a skit's D.O.A. if a failing appliance gets more laughs than the jokes themselves.

I was going to question this as well.
My first reaction to her was, typical disco diva lip sync job.
And you are correct, the sound was way too studio perfect.

My feeling...no way that was live.

I figured out why the music sounded like it was from a studio
all it was was a $50 keyboard playing the built in techno beat, not too hard to not mess that up

Yeah, cause that's the way they were meant to be taken.

Btw anyone here, take a listen to the song and then compare it to the live performance. The way she sings sounds totally different, I honestly don't think she was lip-synching.

The skits were the usual so-so group, but Sir Ian really breathed life into the show. Dame Maggie kissing Jimmy Fallon will be the bit that everyone remembers from this show.

Honk!

I barely paid attention, and even I could figure out what that song meant. And it looked like a live performance to me too. Either that or she's the best damn_lip syncher I've ever seen. I liked how she could be hot without dressing like a slut.

I was just mocking the chorus
which goes la la la, la la la la la, la la la ....
I'd heard that song on the radio a few times, it's kind of catchy actually

Okay cool. But (this isn't towards you), I am sick of people bashing pop music just because the lyrics aren't thoughtful and/or written by the singer themselves. Lighten up and have a good time, that's what pop music is supposed to be about. If you want deep meaningful lyrics then seek elsewhere.

I added a small disclaimer to the original post I made
