Trading Spaces this weekend....3/10

Dude.
Hay on the walls. HAY ON THE WALLS and Pepto-Bismol Pink on the ceiling. Someone MUST have gotten sued.
Did you see it? Did you believe it? Your thoughts....

indianajdp 03-11-02 02:17 PM

First of all...this show irritates me. My wife insists on watching it so sometimes I am forced to watch.

Ohh....but I do like Paige :D

Anyway, YES I did see that damn straw on the wall and couldn't believe it. The fact that a) the designer actually thought of that and considered it appealing and b) the owners acted like they liked it is beyond comprehension.

I've seen worse though...like the episode where the older guy painted a mexican blanket design on the freakin' ceiling

Iron Chef 03-11-02 02:30 PM

I thought that the hay on the walls was a bit too much. Hildy has finally fallen off of her rocker.

Genevieve's kitchen, however was awesome!

Apocrypha 03-11-02 02:43 PM

wife loves the show since we are redocrating soon

Hilde was tripping!! The poor couple with the kids got a pink ceiling and straw glued all over their wall. She failed miserably.
Genevive rocked as usual her kitchen was one of her best

Paige is annoying her haircut her voice her drama background all put together make for nails on chalkboard IMO

OverBoard 03-11-02 03:55 PM

Yeah, the hay on the walls was ridiculous...right up there with painting pointless blue stripes on the perfectly good wood floors of the other couple's house.

D300 03-11-02 08:39 PM

I didn't see the show but read a local newspaper article about that show. The people we're pissed off, it took something like 5 of them over 15 hours to get all the glue and hay off the wall.

Jadzia 03-11-02 10:10 PM

I remember Hildy was the one who insisted on putting brown felt on these people's walls-- even though the neighbors kept telling them "I don't think this is a good idea, they have cats."

She didn't listen of course. The room did look great but I'm sure it probably looked that way for all of one day. I have two cats and can only imagine how quickly the cat hair would build up on the walls.

So was this lesbian couple the first gay couple on Trading Spaces? It was the first one I remembered. And this episode also had an interracial couple, but I think they have already had one. The Boston one with the rooms with the 12-year old girls, I think. Or it was a white couple with a black child.

Anyway, it's interesting that they seem to be getting a good cross-section of different types of people on this show. The sorority house one was a hoot.

WarriorPrincess 03-12-02 12:50 AM

OMG! That episode was too much. Hildy just doesn't care at all what people want - it's all about her. Usually she has decent taste, but that hay and pink ceiling were just about the most hideous things I've ever seen. But Gen did a fantastic job as usual.

I cracked up when I read that they removed the hay immediately - they were so nice about it on air I wondered what they *really* thought - guess I know now! :)

Hildy never does. I understand a designer not wanting to have everything dictated to them-then why get a designer? But it seems like Hildy's ego gets in the way of her taking good input from others. Once she has an idea she's pretty much inflexible. Doug is also guilty of this.

Straw on the walls...and I thought painting those couches (that luckily for the homeowners were ruined by the rain ) was the worst she could do! :D

Scheherazade 03-12-02 02:05 AM

Sometimes I think that the producers say something like, "Okay, nobody has hated their rooms for too long... do something outrageous that they're sure to dislike for ratings sake."

Of course Genevieve pioneered the wall thing when she did the moss wall in that one bedroom. I almost liked that though. The hay thing was just horrible. Maybe if she made a thatch pattern with it instead of just all over the place, but even then.... Ugh!

My wife watches this show religiously. In fact, she'll watch the three episodes on saturday night and then I'll catch her watching them a second time (they air 3, then the same three right after that).

Anyway, the best one I saw was the one where the lady started bawling cause she hated her room so much. She had to leave, but you could hear her crying off camera. That was classic.

That's the infamous fireplace episode. I need to see that one.

Jadzia 03-12-02 08:48 AM

I think Hildy is the US version's Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen. The desiner you love to hate. :)

Although I usually love Lawrence's designs on Changing Rooms. He is a bit dramatic.

I loved that ceiling. I can't wait to have a house so I can do something like that.

I agree. I'd be afraid if Hildy or Doug were to one of my rooms.

Timber 03-12-02 09:22 AM

I still watch and enjoy the show but for me it just hasnt' been the same without Alex.

bardevious 03-12-02 11:09 AM

I thought Alex sucked, personally. She looked like she just stepped out of a Camay commercial and was deigning to consort with "commoners". I think Paige is a much better fit with the concept of the show. Alex was just too....dare I say it...."professional" acting.

Of course, I can't believe that I'm actually seriously analyzing this show. I think I need to go back to school or something...

And yet, there is Amy Wynn Pastor. Mmmmmmmmmm.....Amy Wynn.....chicks with power tools.. vrooooommmm!

Frank's background, consisting of an art degree and part time jobs ranging from elementary teacher to florist, has inspired a variety of techniques on the show. His favorite design element for Trading Spaces is paint… he loves teaching new techniques to the participants and the look on their faces when their projects turn out great! Frank lives in Katy, Texas and when not designing rooms for Trading Spaces, he runs a small craft business called Mosey 'N Me.

Actually, generally speaking, Hilde is one of the better designers on the show. Yes, the straw on the walls was an experiment that went awry - but in general, she's far better than say - the cutesy, country-craft, make-it-up-as-I-go-along Frank.

Not that I'd ever throw Frank out of bed, mind you. I'd just never let him design any room in my house.

-wink-

Woof!

einTier 03-12-02 11:28 AM

My wife watches this, which means I have to watch it.

I didn't see this episode, but I could never have these people decorate my home. Usually, I'm ok with a lot of what they do, but I really hate it when they start creating furniture. That kind of thing was fine when I lived in a fraternity house -- it's unacceptable now. I also don't like it when they don't think about the people they are putting this stuff together for. Any good decorator knows it's not about what they like, it's about working with what the owners like.

Which show was it that the lady was crying? The only one I remember going hideously wrong was the room that was done up in a purple, modern art style that was definately the style of the decorator, but not at all the style of the people who lived there. There were even strange hand sculptures on the fireplace mantle. It was hideous.

I agree; I'd much rather have Hilde design my room than Frank. Most of the time her designs turn out great.

In fact, I would agree to any of the designers doing my room except for Frank. He seems like a nice guy to work with, but whenever he starts drawing stuff on the walls I cringe.

I don't think Broom Hilde would be fun to work with though, she seems too unflexible.

ljp99 03-12-02 02:31 PM

Cant believe theres a thread on this. I actually was reading a Trading Spaces forum for comments on this episode, since I thought Hildy was nuts.

Started watching the show while renovating my kitchen ,
and cant stop. Help.

Joeboo835 03-12-02 05:33 PM

I don't think the one i saw where the lady was crying was the fireplace episode. I think it was just totally not what she wanted, but I cna't remember. I do remember that it was the worst room ever.

Was the fireplace episode the one with the small rocks then she put dirt in there?? That looked terrible

No, the little colored rocks in the fireplace was a different ep. I think the one where the lady started bawling was a room designed by Doug, not Hilde. The homeowners specifically said DO NOT SCREW WITH THE FIREPLACE and Doug did anyway, and the lady was fightin' mad!

Yes, I've seen every episode.
Yes, I plan my Saturday evenings around this show.
Yes, I am pathetic, thank you and good night.
