Simpsons 3/10

whats the deal.. they cut off the chalkboard scene in the opening?!?!?!?!

whotony 03-10-02 07:34 PM

i think they may have done that to get an extra bit of time for showing the star wars trailer at 3 before 9 after malcom

Snake Plissken 03-10-02 07:36 PM

Good episode, but not as funny as tonight's Futurama.

madcougar 03-10-02 07:36 PM

I don't think this is the first time that's happened. I recall reading that when the episode goes longer than usual, they will cut the intro short.

This is the first episode I can remember that didn't jump around from one crazy situation to another, if you can believe that going to Branson made sense.

Not too many big laughs from where I was sitting. Did think that the "Old man yells at cloud" thing was funny.

I see it very often in reruns.. but I believe that was the first time I saw it happen in a new episode

Wazootyman 03-10-02 07:54 PM

I could not stop laughing during the first 3 minutes with Homer's love for the XFL (It might be because of the fact that I pretend love the XFL as a joke, but either way it's still fantastic)

Aghama 03-10-02 07:58 PM

At least it wasn't an embarassing episode.

yecul 03-10-02 08:10 PM

Pretty much tailed off at the end after a promising beginning. They keep getting away from what made/makes the Simpsons so great -- multiple plots. The best episodes always have one main plot line with one or two other stories going on in the background. Now they're just getting wacky.

darkside 03-10-02 09:58 PM

The XFL joke was probably the best one in the show. It was an okay episode, but maybe the Simpsons has finally run out of gas?

Tesiae 03-10-02 10:07 PM

Did anyone else notice that the quality of animation is below what it was at the beginning of the season? What's the deal? They got cheaper animators?

No way, I think this season was very funny.

This reminds me of Girly Edition when Burns asks Smithers if he thinks the nuclear power plant has killed the ducks in Bart's story and Smither replies "There's no maybe about it sir." Or something like that.

My point is that people have been saying The Simpsons peaked years ago. But I will keep watching as long as they keep making them.

Who is Ray-Jay???

I vaguely remember this commercial.

I know it is one of the best commercials of all time...

So what was the premise of the commercial:

You could call him Ray..
You could call him Jay...
You could call him Ray-Jay..

Thanks

bralph 03-11-02 08:21 AM

I found the whole Branson subplot very funny. Probably moreso than many people, because I've actually been there a few times (my wife's grandparents live there). I've never seen any of the shows though. I can tell you that Yakov does indeed have his own theater!

I'm not sure where his popularity with Simpsons writers comes from, but he has appeared (in name) in at least two episodes -- Krusty Gets Kancelled in which he is the only guest Krusty can book once Gabbo comes to town, and Mom and Pop Art where Homer starts to blab RJJ's speil ("You can call him Ray...").

From the The Simpson Archive, the capsule review for Mom and Pop Art:

Don Del Grande tells us who Ray Jay Johnson is: He was a regular on Redd Foxx's variety show back in 1977. His entire gimmick went like this: when someone called him "Mr. Johnson", he replied:

Oh, you doesn't has to call me Mr. Johnson!
My name is Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.
Now you can call me Ray
Or you can call me Jay
Or you can call me Johnny
Or you can call me Sonny
Or you can call me Junie
Or you can call me Ray-Jay
Or you can call me R.J.
Or you can call me R.J.J.
Or you can call me R.J.J.Junior
But you doesn't has to call me Mr. Johnson!

...

John Jensen adds: Then several years ago he did some TV commercials, reviving the schtick, and then in the last spot for the campaign a hot babe called him Mr Johnson and he said "Now SHE can call me Mr Johnson." Don't worry, it wasn't that funny being there either.

I really found it funny because I lived there for 6 years, and went to many shows, including Yakov Smirnoff's at the Grand Palace. (the guy is NOT funny). :)

HOMER:
"Lisa doesn't borrow my car and stay out all night with some... hoochy."

GRANDPA:
"She's no hoochy. Her name is Zelda and she understands me."

MARGE:
"Grandpa, I gotta tell ya. She's a stone cold hoochy."

HOMER:
"Straight up Marge. That hoochy only likes you, because you can drive."

GRANDPA:
"Shut up. You don't know her. Zelda loves me. I HATE THIS HOOOOUSE."

Grandpa runs up stairs and blares Glenn Miller Orchestra (?) on a record player.

HOMER:
"Turn that down. You call that music!? I---." MUSIC STOPS. "I just don't know what to do."

MARGE:
"He used to be such an angel. Maybe you should give him another chance."

HOMER:
"No. He's gotta learn, Marge. The way my dad made me learn."

MARGE:
"He is your dad."

HOMER:
"Cosmic."

BEST PART OF THE SHOW!

All in all a good episode.

lactose 03-11-02 10:51 AM

It was an ok episode, but they're not as good as they used to be. I mean, what was up with that stupid NSync episode???? plus, I can't believe they slammed John Woo!!! one of the greatest directors of action! nuts! nuts I say!

hotaru_san 03-11-02 11:24 AM

It wasn't as good as some of the episodes in this season, but it wasn't the worst. There were several moments that made me laugh. I still think the simpsons is a good show, even though some of the episodes aren't very good.

crankyman 03-11-02 11:55 AM

if you're looking for something with a big back seat and a lot of gas, i'm your man!

cranky.

CPA-ESQ. 03-11-02 02:43 PM

Thanks FanBoy!!

Now I can sleep at night. :)

Tanaraq 03-11-02 03:52 PM

The line that cracked me up for some unknown reason was:

Homer - "You sunk my Scrabbleship"

I also laughed out loud at the little kid/mother exchange in Bronson:

Kid - Hey Ma, I want a cookie.
Mother - No dice.
Kid - This AINT over!

This episode had a feel to it like the old classic season 4 and 5 episodes.

POWERBOMB 03-11-02 05:40 PM

It was a very funny episode. The Simpsons will only "run out of gas" when Homer decides he is better off doing feature films leaving Marge to break in 2 rookies while trying to raise a child and continue solving paranormal FBI cases and....uh.....Oh, whoops, wrong show. Nevermind.
