Which is a bigger Buffy influence of these two genre classics?

I seem to notice several striking similarities between Buffy and the fantasy classics Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. While I am sure Buffy has a lot of influence from many fields, I was wondering which one you think shares the most with the series. I go with LOTR because it has a lot about magical gems and thwarting dark power.

Also, as an added question, what do you think would happen if the Scoobs or any major player in the series found the One Ring of power? Would they dispose of it or fall under its spell?

Geez, I sound like the comic book guy from The Simpsons. I hope thinking of something like this doesn't make me look like a nerd.

LOTR and Star Wars are both too similar to diferentiate when comparing to something else. I remember in Humanities class we studied both of them along with the Greek myths and the archetypal heroic quest. Lucas has discussed how he based his storyline on these quests, and I'm sure Tolkien did the same.

Also Spike got the Vampire Ring Of Power, but Buffy just kicked his ass and took it away, then sent it to Angel, who didn't want it.

Out of the choices, i would probably say LOTR, because of a couple of stories about the inherent corruption associated with power.

But, I think Buffy has way too many influences to pin down. Comic Books, Horror Movies, Sci-Fi (with a lot of Star Trek), Kubrick (Spike = Alex), Lynch (esp. the last episode of season 4), slapstick comedy. I'm pretty sure there's a lot more...

Don't forget Hong Kong Cinema. Whedon is a huge fan and it shows. At least to me.

You're right. I remember the show where Buffy fought Adam and saw a tremendous amount of John Woo type stuff, especially with the doves.
