Like the subject says ...

This message was brought to you by the "das is angry at the cancellation of 'Thieves' and is in a bad mood" foundation.

Are you still in a bad mood?? Is there anything I can do? How 'bout a hug?

Sorry if this is off-topic, but would you mind explaining what "jumping the shark" means? Until reading it in another thread, I've never heard the term before.

Jeez, with the first run airings just about over and the mid-season reruns about to begin, is there any hope to see a smile in the Monkey household any time soon?

Go to: http://www.jumptheshark.com

Basically it means the point where a tv show reaches its high point and everything is downhill after that. The origin of the name is from the Happy Days episode where they go to California and Fonzie jumps the shark tank on waterskis. That is considered the high point of Happy Days and everything was downhill after that.

Yeah ... it's become like "wazzzzzzzzzzzup?" It was a clever phrase for a while, but now it just seems annoying.

And did I really type "Jupming"? I need a vacation.

Is that right? I always interpreted it as the moment you realized that the show now sucked, and was going to keep sucking. As in, "What? Fonzie's jumping a shark? This sucks! I'm never watching this again." Subtle, but still a difference. Now I'm confused.

I think that statement is still vague enough to be taken either way. Apparently it boils down to this: Was Fonzie's jumping of the shark cool or not cool?

It's my own fault for starting this thread ...

The subtle difference that you speak of is that when the show "jumps the shark" it's at its highest point. If it "has jumped the shark" it's likely at one of those low points after its peak. When someone says, "this show has jumped the shark" it means, like you say, that the show is far below its past glory.

Or when I say "Jumping (jupming) the Shark" has jumped the shark, it means that the phrase is long past its high point of "cute" and is now somewhere around "annoying."

Everything Fonzie ever did was cool. The foundation of our existence on this planet stems from this statement. If society believes that something Fonzie did was not cool, then we have strayed from the path and must re-examine everything we believe. Right, Mrs. C?

Well said. Plus he wore the jacket when he jumped the shark. That was cool.

Whenever you saw a HD episode after that, you know that nothing could top Fonzie jumping that shark. It may have still been a good show, but not the best. Hence, the show had "jumped the shark."

The axiom is truth. If you think something he did was "uncool," it is your perception that is skewed.

Now wait a minute....I always though Jumping the Shark meant those crazy, way out tricks that TV shows try AFTER they hit their peak to try to get viewership up again.

Like the Brady Bunch - Oliver moving in.
Friends - Chandler and Monica getting married
Mork and Mindy - Mearth being born (Jonathan Winters being added to the cast)
Laverne and Shirley -Moving them to California

Etc, etc, etc.

CFG!

That was always my take. The shows were losing viewers and would resort to outlandishness or gimmicks to keep your interest.

And it was pretty outlandish for Fonzie to jump the shark.

I believe those outlandish acts were the basis for "Jumping the Shark" but people use it sometimes for a show they used to like but now don't. They don't have a certain "Jump the Shark" moment.

Okay, I feel vindicated now for my interpretation of "Jumping the Shark". On the Jan. 8th episode of "That '70s Show", they did a rip on the whole "jumping a shark" thing, where Fez imagines that he is Fonzie and is jumping a shark (Fez thought it was cool). After coming out of the daydream, Eric says something to the effect of "uh, didn't that episode suck?" and Fez replies, "Yeah, I guess I did stop watching the show after that". The clear implication is that the episode of Fonzie jumping the shark WAS THE LOW POINT, not the episodes after it. Thank you very much.

Since this old thread has already been bumped for some unknown reason (), I might as well point out that The Simpsons literally "jumped the shark" last night.

Well, since it's been bumped, I'll echo the original sentiment that started the thread. Saying a show "Jumped the Shark" is about as tired as going to PetitionsOnline to save every single show that ever gets cancelled.
