Seems like this poll resurfaces every six months or so ...

I can't really say, as I've only heard two that I can recall.

And didn't Londo narrate the opening for the pilot?

And Season One.

Monologue from Season One
spoken by Jeffrey Sinclair

It was the dawn of the third age of mankind -- ten years after the Earth-Minbari War.
The Babylon Project was a dream, given form. Its goal: to prevent another war, by creating a place where humans and aliens can work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call -- home away from home -- for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers.
Humans and aliens, wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal . . . all alone in the night.
It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace.
This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

Monologue from Season Two
spoken by John Sheridan

The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace.
A self-contained world five miles long, located in neutral territory. A place of commerce and diplomacy for a quarter of a million humans and aliens. A shining beacon in space . . . all alone in the night.
It was the dawn of the Third Age of Mankind -- the year the Great War came upon us all.
This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2259. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

Monologue from Season Three
spoken by Susan Ivanova

The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace.
It failed.
But in the year of the Shadow War, it became something greater: our last, best hope -- for victory.
The year is 2260. The place: Babylon 5.

I'll leave seasons four and five alone, since it's not showing just yet (and not really a monologue).

If I had to pick only one, considering Ivanova is my favorite thing in the whole B5 universe...

O'Hare has the best voice, but I could never get over the lamenes of saying "The name of the place is Babylon 5" ... it sounds stupid every time I hear it. Ivanova's "The place: Babylon 5" is infinitely better. Still, I voted for Season 5. Every time I hear that it brings the whole 5 year arc immediately to my mind. There are so many great lines. It sets the stage so perfectly, I think.

I have to go with Sinclair here. I still love the season 1 monologue, and despite the cool music and mixed-voice intro in Season 5, I'm still a fan of the first year. Call me crazy.

I finally voted on this, as now I've heard all the monologues. I went with Season 4. I really enjoyed how each part of the monologue applied to the character speaking it. You had to wait nearly the entire season to see how "A year of pain" applied to Marcus.

Season 5 is okay, but having JMS listed on the back of the spacecraft ruined it for me. Brought me right out of the show.
