Massive telethon this Friday
 

What do my fellow 'Talkers think of this massive telethon this Friday?

It's called "America: A Tribute to Heroes," and they're going to raise $ for those affected by the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. So far, The WB, UPN, HBO, ABC,
CBS, FOX, NBC, Lifetime, E!, FX, MTV, SoapNet, National Geographic Channel and the Fox Movie Channel, as well as Spanish language outlets Telemundo and HBO Latino will be airing the special. Other cable channels, including TNT and USA, are expected to decide Wednesday whether to air it.

So far, Bon Jovi, Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Sheryl Crow, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, The Dixie
Chicks, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Calista Flockhart, Dennis Franz, Kelsey Grammer, Tom Hanks, Faith Hill, Alicia Keys, Conan O'Brien, Tom Petty, Ray Romano, Julia Roberts, Paul Simon, Will Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Robin Williams, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young have signed to appear/perform. More celebrities are expected to be added to the list in the coming days.

While it's massively historic, hasn't there been an obscene amount of $ already raised for various charities since the attacks? I hope it pulls in the cash, because we'll NEVER see all these networks/channels doing this ever again.

Hey, as long as they don't air it on Sci-Fi and mess up The Invisible Man and Farscape, they can do what they like :)

Seriously, we've been trashing this thing over in Other, but that guest list is 10 times better than what was originally suggested. On one hand, it's not that generous, since no one watches any of those channels on Friday during the summer anyway. On the other hand, who cares if it raises more money. We need money, and the more money rich people can raise, the less money the governement needs to allocate, and the more money that can be spent on the countless other things affected by this heinous act of absolute cowardice.

Oh, wait a minute ... did you say Robin Williams? Nevermind ... this is a bad idea :)

In all seriousness, I'm Red, White, and Blue ... through and through, so I'll watch it no matter what it ends up being.

I saw Dave Matthews, Mariah Carey, and Sting. Actors (including Sally Fields, Whoopi Goldberg, etc) were answering the phones. That seemed pretty odd/interesting.

Maybe, but remember that an obscene number of people were killed. Even if fifty million dollars were raised, that would amount to less than ten thousand dollars aid per family.

Rather than trying to bleed the American public for yet more money they probably don't have to spare (I know I don't), why not make the celebrities each donate a mil for appearing on this show? Except for Willie Nelson. I hear the Feds have already bled him dry.

I think I saw the lead singer from Goo Goo Dolls with him,,,I was quite disturbed by that "rendition".

BTW Joel kicked some major ASS!! :D

Just goes to show what happens when you throw a bunch of musicians together, the good really stadout, and the bad look worse. Tom Petty turns out a scathing "I Wont Back Down", its venomous context changed perfectly. Neil Young was heartfelt but has too grating and limited a voice for doing "Imagine". Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, and Sheryly Crow were all pretty solid. Enrique Iglesias, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey all were overblown and silly. And, Wyclef made an absolute fool out of himself with his affected, fake regge impersonation. Less said about the Slack Pancake, sorry,... Limp Biscut guys, the better. And poor Willie Nelson, having to close the whole affair with a muddled, under-reheased, too long rendition...ahhh, well, the best of intentions is what matters. Hope they did some good.

I actually laughed out loud during Mariah Carey's performance. I feel sort of bad about it, since I could see it was heartfelt and the subject matter was appropriate, but a laughably bad song is a laughably bad song any way you slice it!
