Quantum Leap thread

anyone else watch the reruns on sci-fi at 4pm and midnight?
great show
does anyone remember the name of Sam's wife in the episode where he switched places with Al?
Was it Donna? Because in yesterday's episode he was a teacher at a school where this girl went that stood him up at the alter ten years after the time he had lept to.

Deftones 08-24-01 07:28 PM

I love this show. Unfortunately, I got interested in it after it had ended, so I caught alot of the reruns. The only thing, is I've never seen the last show on any of the channels that showed in in reruns. If someone, wouldn't mind, I'd love to have quick synopsis of what the last episode consisted of. Thanks!

if i recall correctly, it involved sam in some sort of bar, with someone explaining to him the cosmic reason that he was leaping around (that that was his purpose in life), and at the end it said that he never got back home.

Seeker 08-24-01 09:56 PM

Great series with some great episodes. I have most of them on VHS tape.....

NZ_DVD_Freak 08-24-01 10:09 PM

What a weird coincidence. They started reruns here in New Zealand and last weeks episode was the one with the girl who stood him up at the alter ten years later (she was played by Teri Hatcher).

Seeker 08-24-01 10:13 PM

I think the premise of that episode was that Sam changed history enough so that they ended up getting married rather than him being stood up....

so yes... he would be married to Donna "now", but he wasn't married to Donna when he first leaped.

RolloTomasi 08-24-01 10:20 PM

The last episode went a little like this...

Spoiler:
Sam walks into a bar, and the first thing he notices is that the reflection of himself. Since he hasn't seen himself in three years, the man appears almost a stranger to him. The bartender acts as if he knows everything about Sam and his leaping, dispensing nuggets of wisdom. Miners populate the bar; they are people Sam has seen in his travel, but they're not the same people, and they don't recognize Sam.

There's an accident at the mine, and when one of the miners goes in and rescues some people, he leaps out. The other miners may be in the same predicament he is - they might be other leapers.

Sam talks to the bartender again. Eventually, he speaks frankly to Sam, asking him if he would want to keep leaping. (The batender must be God or Time, or one of the powers that be...) Sam has to grapple with his decision - does he really want to keep doing this, changing other people's lives for the better, while never having one of his own?

Eventually he comes to a decision. He leaps to another time, meeting with one of Al's first wives. She thought Al was dead (because he was a POW in Vietnam, I think), and eventually remarried. However, Sam tells her the truth, and eventually Al and her are reunited.

Dr. Samuel Beckett never returned home.

That's all form memory, so anyone who wants to correct something I've missed go ahead.

BTW, this is one of my favorite shows on television. People always made cracks about how I liked a show with a cross-dresser though...

'Quantum Leap' is one of those truly magical pieces of television. The writing, directing, and even acting was near garbage for almost an entire season, and at some point Bakula and Stockwell walked down to Bellasario's office and said, "Check this - we've got an idea. How 'bout we make this show good." And the rest is history.

Every once in a while I run across someone who didn't like it. After helping them remove their head from their ass, I proceed to shove my foot up it.

As for the Final Leap, a text description can never do it justice. Track it down on VHS or see it on Sci-Fi or something, because it's well worth the effort. It's a difficult episode, because it runs through so many different emotions, but it's very strong. The description above is most of what happens. It's all very surreal, and the interaction between "Al" the bartender and Sam is incredibly well done. The basic theme is that this layover of sorts is the calm before the storm. The leaps are going to get more difficult, but first Sam has to return to one of his previous leaps that didn't work out exactly how he wanted.

I always wondered why it got so much better with time. I've been viewing a few re-runs from an early series (probably series one) and it reminded me why it wasn't a "must see" for me at the time and I missed a number of episodes when they first screened. Later, as you say, it improved almost beyond recognition and I followed it avidly.

That final episode was sad but the "sourness" was a refeshing change from the normal saccharine of formulaic TV!

(I particularly liked the good vs evil theme that became more explicit towards the end and those muti-part, almost filmic episodes).

Quantum Leap reference on Family Guy tonight

WarriorPrincess 08-30-01 06:05 AM

I loved this show when it first aired, and watched it again from beginning to end this last year thanks to sci-fi.

About the last episode:

Spoiler:
The descriptions above are great, just want to add a little bit. In an earlier episode, Al tried to get Sam to tell his first wife, Gina, that he was still alive so that she wouldn't remarry. Al basically tried to manipulate the leap to help himself, when it was truly about someone else Sam needed to help. Because Sam figured it out, he didn't alter something that wasn't "meant" to be altered that time around, and Gina got remarried to a lawyer. She was the love of Al's life, and so he remarried 4 more times I believe, after returning home. (he had been a POW). Most of the banter between Sam and Al in the entire series revolved around Al's sex life and women troubles, especially in regard to his ex-wives and Tina, his current girlfriend. Al always had a funny story to tell, but you could always see that bit of wistfulness toward his true love, Gina.

So in the final episode, when Sam was told he could go home at any time, that the leaping was actually up to him and no one else, Sam says something about needing to fix something for a good friend, that it was time for it to happen. Basically Sam leads the audience to believe that he's going to fix one last thing that needed to be fixed for Al, then would go home. So he leaped into that same time as he had seasons before when Gina was home alone wondering if her husband Al would ever come back from the war. This time the leap WAS for Al, so Sam could change things. He convinced Gina that he was telling the truth, and told her that Al was indeed coming home. She cried, I believe Sam leaped, then we're told in a text message that Gina never remarried, that she waited for Al and they lived a long and wonderful life together. They had several children and were still happily married. YAY!!!!!!! Elation for Al!!!

And then the bomb drops...

Because then the text said that Sam never went home.

WHAT?!?!? But, but, but, he HAS to go home!!! :( I was furious for about a minute, then I bawled for at least an hour. I don't think I've ever cared quite so much that a character in a tv show didn't have the future that I wanted for them. My boyfriend thinks I take such things WAY too seriously, but I actually care about the characters that touch me like Sam did - well-written, well-acted, genuinely heroic.

We're told in one of the early episodes that Sam is VERY happily married in the present time, and that his wife has forbidden Al from telling Sam (with his swiss-cheese memory) that she exists, because if Sam knew, he couldn't do what he needs to do to help people. She is lovely and noble and they are truly meant to be together. So when I'm told that basically his altruism and need to help humanity end up making him leap forever, and that he and his wonderful wife never end up together, it breaks my heart. I would give SOOOO much for them to have made him go home instead of leaping forever.

Sigh. That said, the last episode was thought-provoking and amazingly moving. Sam got to see a crossroads of sorts, where everything is completely familiar and yet very different from things he knows and remembers. People's faces are familiar, but they won't know him and they have different identies. People's names will be familiar but he won't recognize them. It's all a mixed-up amalgamation of his reality, and helps him come to terms with the true nature of the universe, and the power he holds within it. Definitely see it if you can.

WP: You're not the only one who got a little misty.
Hell, I sometimes STILL get a little misty when I
watch my tape of Mirror Image.

I am glad to see a bunch of fans of QL here.
It is, by far, my favorite show ever.

We get reruns here in Canada too on Space.
Two a day, I believe, but I have th eps. on
tape.

It's an excellent episode. People always complain about it, but it works very well for me. Sam finally has to face up to his life. For years, he's wanted to go home, wanted to stop being a pawn in someone else's game. But he learns that he controls his own destiny, that he can no longer blame a higher power for his leaping. It's easy to be heroic when you think you have no choice ... it's much more difficult now that he knows he can stop and very moving to find that he never returns home. This is a special piece of television, and 'Quantum Leap' will always hold a special place in my heart.

Yeah, das, it took some time for
me to fully appreciate this
ep of Quantum Leap.
I now see exactly where they
were coming from and enjoy
this one a whole lot more
then when I first saw it.
That doesn't mean I
don't still get misty
eyed, though. ;)

I've been watching this on Universal-HD since it started in February, I've seen a rerun here or there, but never in order. And so far the order hasn't mattered...but anyways, my reason for resurrecting a 4 and a half year old thread ( ) is this...

I just watched "All-Americans," about a couple HS football players, throwing a game, etc. But at one point Al shows up and Sam says "Where have you been?", and Al replies, "I've been watching Super Bowl 30, oh Sam, the Steelers are down by 3..."

Well, Super Bowl 30 was played in 1996 I think, and according to Tivo this episode aired in 1990...and the Steelers were actually in Super Bowl 30 - :wtf:. That was the only point of bringing this thread back to life...I thought it insanely weird, especially given the premise of the show.

Michael Corvin 03-07-06 03:09 PM

Not wierd. The show is fact. They knew about the Steelers. :)

Thanks to Universal HD I haven't been able to complete making my own DVDs from Sci-Fi(I don't think they show it anymore). I missed 5 episodes total from seasons 4 & 5. Sucks.

Palaver 03-07-06 04:32 PM

Looks like they were down by three at one point in the fourth quarter, also. Neat.

Fok 03-08-06 03:27 AM

It's too bad the DVD sets are overpriced, maybe I'll buy the show if it gets released on HDDVD

Won't they have to go through that whole licensing nightmare all over again for the new format? I imagine "Quantum Leap" won't be coming on the new format for quite some time.

I think they feel that the music costs aren't worth it and will release as is on any future formats as well. That is why I recorded my own. F*ck 'em.

However, all the music is on the R2 releases.

Seriously?! Perhaps I will pick this up eventually. I wasn't going to because of the music issue (mainly Georgia, but if they are intact on R2 it may be worth it to find a region free player.

While we're on the subject, do you know if any other regions have "fixed" music for other serires on dvd? Specifically season 1 of Felicity. That's been sitting on my shelf for years now unopened specifically because of that. Thankfully I have some "copies" of most of s1 of original Felcity and the key(?) epsiodes of Leap.

Michael Corvin 03-08-06 09:50 AM

Yep. I didn't find out about the R2 releases until after I'd already bought seasons 2 & 3. :( They are also 6 single sided discs instead of the DVD-18 crap Universal puts out here.
