Primetime Glick: opinions?

...?

Conditional thumbs up. Like any variety show or sketch comedy, parts of it work and parts of it flop. The best parts are his interviews on stage and in the home with celebrities. The "commercials" are lame.

Agreed. With the exception of the Conan O' Brian foundation to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the guy who played the guy with the moustache on Cheers. That one was funny. But others have been mostly dumb. The interviews are very funny though.

The Glick character is great, but they don't use him enough. They try to make this lame variety show with all sorts of stupid character. News flash, Martin: your Tommy Lee Jones is SUCK. I still watch it and sometimes enjoy it, but I'm quickly tiring of it. The commercials are lame and the whole band thing's not working. Last week was really bad where interviewing Molly Shannon was like carrying on a conversation with a brick wall. He had to provide all the material while she just sat there and showcased how big her gums were. I guess you could say I'm pretty disappointed. Short's very talented, and Glick's a great character ... it's just not working for me right now.

Crying I was laughing so hard during the Nathan Lane interview; as was Lane.

"Now who was that drunk actor you worked with?"

The filmed interviews are always funnier because the cameramen laugh and there's no pauses waiting for an audience to laugh.

I loathe Martin Short

Jnuke 07-24-01 03:17 PM

I think Michael McKean kind of steals the show even when he's not saying anything.

Slumbering Fist 07-24-01 03:24 PM

Suprised at how good it is- well, the interviews anyway. The comercials and skits are pretty lame, though I liked the Sal Mineo puppet theater. I dont see it having much legs, though. Its not like he can interview lots of celebrites and have the whole clueless act be funny every time and the attempts to show his backstage and behind the scenes banter are'nt very strong (if I want that I'll watch Larry Sanders).

I was ready to hate it, but I think it's pretty good!

i LOVE this show!! sure beats the hell outta TV FUNHOUSE!! (i didnt really like that show) i am glad we now have a worthy show to follow south park!!!

MasterofDVD 07-26-01 05:36 AM

I was glad to see that Short was doing something these days...

Now I wish he was out of a job again.

The interviews are just crap and the skits are a waste of film. I think that the Glick character is about as unfunny as it gets. I catch myself watching the show now and then but it's like I'm in a trance cause it's so bad. As soon as I snap to I turn it to something worth my time.

Not doing so well among this crowd.

Daytripper 07-30-01 02:21 PM

I think the show is hilarious. But then again, I'm a huge SCTV fan. I'll agree that some skits fall flat, but even they are mildly amusing. I'll also agree that Marty should skip doing Tommy Lee Jones again. So far, the funniest episode IMO was the first one with Steve Martin.

I have never been a big fan of Martin Short but I find this show funny, but I also enjoy watching animal puppets screw real animals(TV Funhouse).

larryw 08-01-01 02:04 PM

Thumbs up from me. Though I pretty much only watch the Glick parts (monologue, interviews, end) and skip past the skits.

Richard Malloy 08-01-01 03:36 PM

Surprisingly amusing - I'm still watching.

Charlie Goose 08-01-01 04:50 PM

Martin Short is super-talented, but you wouldn't know it from this piece of crap show.
