Or will Loren Michaels keep changing writers and cast members until the year 3000?

I don't see an end to it, it's fairly inexpensive to produce and it gets decent ratings. Plus, if it wasn't on, we wouldn't have crossover movie classics like It's Pat or Stuart Saves His Family.

It will likely run forever. Keep in mind that at its heart, SNL is the "not ready for Prime Time players." We give them hell when they're not funny, but the idea is to have a forum for new talent to try and learn the ropes and showcase their individual styles. As arrogant as Lorne Michaels is, I think he realizes this and will continue to seek out new talent even if the rating decline into oblivion.

This show has royally sucked for years now, and what do they do? They make it even longer! It's practically a 3-hour show now.

is this show still on the air? I stopped watching it in 1992. It's like mold, it just keeps spreading....

As long as it keeps getting decent ratings, it'll never be off the air.

It will end someday. Our sun will go nova, and Loren Micheals will torment us no longer.

It's an hour and a half. Hasn't it been an hour and a half for many years now? I remember watching it for 90 minutes back in the 80's

The show is great and almost always has been. I always enjoy watching the repeats on Comedy Central but I don't think they air enough of the origianl cast shows. Anyway I doubt it will end anytime soon but the sketches into films should stop.

I thought it wisely ended about 20 years ago. Isn't the current thing that's on a running bad joke parody of the original?

I think it's always been 90 minutes. If you watch SNL on Comedy Central, it's edited to 60 minutes.

I hope it doesn't end. It's a Saturday night staple and the ratings went up during the last season. Although I think Mad TV does a much better job and is usually more consistent in their material, I try to watch SNL and TIVO Mad TV.

Its had some absolutely disasterous seasons (the one after the original cast left, and the one with Chris Elliot, Janene Garafalo, and Micheal Mckean) and survived. Its a pretty good deal, easy to keep alive, because if a cast fails, they can just replace them and try again (call it the Doctor Who effect). It would take three or four casts in a row that utterly failed to bring in viewers before they would even dream of cancelling it.

It's been slowly getting better over the years. I don't see it ending until Lorne Michaels wants to leave / retire.

I wonder if it'll continue without him. I'm sure it could, but would it?

It has gotten much better in the last few years. The weekend updates are the best they have benn since Dennis Miller left and the political commentary is hillarious. I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.

A few months ago I read an article that was about either Cheri Oteri or Molly Shannon leaving (I don't remember which). In the article they asked Lorne Michaels if he would be leaving anytime soon.

His reply was along the lines that he would probably stick it out until the end...another 4 years. I remember thinking that that would take it to season 30.

I posted something about this when I first read it, but now it's too old to find.

Lorne Michaels did leave the show at one point, in the 80's, and I'm sure they had to get on their knees to get him back. Like it or dislike it, it gets fairly good ratings and somehow manages to stay in the news.

Every season I keep hoping that it will improve. Now I only watch if the host or musical guest is worth it. And even though the show can get stale, I have to agree with das Monkey.

I think the show could continue to survive -- but they should fire every cast member (except lovely Tina Fey, who is doing a bang-up job on the news). Will Ferrell looks and sounds nothing like W. If there's anything on TV sadder than watching Chris Kattan trying to immitate a celebrity, I haven't seen it (and I watched Big Brother). And Ana Gastmeyer, PLEASE get off my TV screen, you SUCK!
I don't know why I still watch, I guess for the news segment and to help me fall asleep immediately afterwards.
Some of the election stuff was funny -- with the material they were given, how could it not be? Since then, it's just been sad.
