Tonight's episode was one of the very best that I've seen. Without spoiling anything for those who missed it, there are many unexpected events. Any thoughts from those who caught it? Any predictions on the season finale?

Pillowhead 05-14-01 02:52 AM

Yeah, this was a pretty insane episode. The last two have been terrific. All I know is that Jackie Jr. is in some deep doo doo.
I can't wait till the next episode, poop will hit the fan.

Red Dog 05-14-01 09:48 AM

The first 40 minutes were pretty blah, but then it did a total 180. And I have to say it again, the woman who plays Gloria is so hot!

Dave99 05-14-01 09:55 AM

Pre spoiled for easy digestion
Spoiler:

I this one was very good also. Jackie Jr is a complete moron, should be interesting how that works out, I imagine Tony will going crazy figuring out what to do. I didn't notice any Russian invovlement in the previews, I hope they are not going to let that angle go away quietly. Any polls on how many people get wacked next week? Oh, and what was with that ending with the guy getting the groceries and driving home?

Dave99 05-14-01 09:56 AM

And a total freak, but..probably worth it.

First 40 minutes blah?!?

The whole episode had the tone of the first season, very dark, seeing Tony at his absolute worst. Even though she is awful I was praying he wouldn't kill her when she was asking him too... And Carmela is such a great character. And who else was glad to see the Frenchman from Night On Earth and Ghost Dog as the new father?

Another great episode, although entirely different than last week's. I hope they don't try to do too much in the finale.

CPA-ESQ. 05-14-01 02:11 PM

What do you think??

[Spoilers]

Did Tony want to give Jackie Jr a pass and was:

A) Releived when Richie asked for one. (therefore, Tony did not have to give the order to kill, or look like a pu$$y in front of his men)

B) Looking for a way to "wash his hands" and say well if he dies - at least I'm not the one who broke my promise to Jackie Sr, and if he lives - at least it was not my decision, it was a request from another made guy.

Now given the above.... and he told him to handle the situation as he sees fit. Did he then decide to kill Jackie Jr. at the end instead of letting him live. And this is why he told his mother "he's involved in drugs...etc"

I think he made up the drugs stuff because Ralph was the one who had him "working" for him (and the one who told him how Jackie Sr and Tony hit the fast track).

Triton 05-14-01 03:40 PM

I don't think Jackie Jr. is dead yet. I remember seeing him in next week's clip. Could Tony have been making a suggestion to Ralphie by giving him his gun back during the conversation about Jackie? Anyone think the ending was bizarre? I was waiting for the man's car to explode or for him to get shot by Gloria or something. Right, Eric Raether?!

Yeah, I didn't get that ending either.

I thought last night's episode was great. I liked last week's also (Directed by Steve Buscemi) As a kid I used to camp in the Pine Barrens with my family every summer. I remember this one summer taking a long hike in the woods with my sisters and it doesn't take long to get lost with miles and miles of trees and bushes that all look the same in every direction. It's got to be harder in the snow. :D

And while missing a shoe too. :) These guest directors add great flavor to the series. Last week's had a very Buscemi-esque feel to it. Or maybe it just reminded me of the closing scene in Fargo.

Crizzar 05-14-01 08:31 PM

I'm looking to watch the end again in the repeat because now that I think about it, who was the hitman talking to before he got in his car?...was he talking to Gloria?

thejammy 05-15-01 09:36 AM

Spoiler:
The ending is supposed to show "business as usual".

I was thinking the same thing as well, I thought she was going to jump out and stab him or something. I guess what they are trying to show is that they can turn it on and off like a faucet.

As for Tony, I think he was making a suggestion to Ralphie to make sure he does the right thing. I think Ralphie is going to kill Jackie Jr. But the only thing holding him back is, the fact that Ralphie will not be able to deal with Ro. Plus he also thinks that Tony is going to use it against him. Chris knows, that Tony doesn't want Jackie Jr. to be whacked, but...Ralphie has to show Tony that he is a true Captain, and he needs to squash this problem before it gets out of hand. But Tony cannot do it, because it is Jackie Aprile's kid. Psychologically, it would tear him apart.

There is alot of sub-themes going on and manipulation.

Does anyone think That Ralphie set up Jackie?

It was just a tease guys! Of course we are waiting for retaliation from Gloria, etc, etc., but they don't bring it. The ending was f*cking great. . . violation of expectations, let's hope David Chase keeps that up.

While it was a great episode, I knew right away that wasn't really the Pine Barrens. No mountains down there and there were clearly mountains in the background. Also, Exit 12 is down near Ocean City, the Pine Barrens are not that far south. On the radio yesterday, the actor who plays Bobby Bacala said they filmed it in Harriman, NY, near West Point, back in January. During the night scenes it was 5 degrees and everyone was freezing. Well worth it, though, as I think it was the best episode ever.

Yeah, I heard him on the radio the other day too. He was hilarious. They said they were treated really nice up there.

huzefa 05-16-01 12:05 PM

I missed the last bit of the episode. The last part I saw was Tony talkign to Carmela about the lemon snaps and she take something out of the oven. Then the guy on the cellphone says, hi it's me.... can someone tell me what happened after that? Who was he talking to on the phone? What happened after that?

Spoiler:
"We're like leather and lace."

That's how Tony's describes his relationship with Gloria to Dr. Melfi. He tells her that while Gloria is dark and dangerous and quite possibly a "full-blown loopty-loo," he just can't stay away from her.

"Amour fou," Melfi replies. That's French for "crazy love," she tells Tony -- love that's all-consuming. But no matter whether you quote the French or Stevie Nicks, it all boils down to one thing: Tony's got it bad...and it's about to get worse.

One day, Carmela is at Globe Mercedes, having some work done on her wagon. Since the courtesy van isn't available to give her a ride home, a member of the sales staff -- a nice young woman named Trillo -- offers her a lift. So Carmela ends up being chauffeured by, and chatting amiably with, the Other Woman. Gloria compounds her transgression a few days later by phoning Carmela to chat about a new car. Gloria sweetly suggests, "Maybe your husband will treat you (to one)." What she doesn't realize is that Carmela's husband is sitting right next to her, and when he finds out who called, he's not in the mood to dole out treats.

Seething, Tony tracks down Gloria and tells her he never wants to see her again. But later, when she phones him, sobbing and hysterical, Tony ends up at her house. Not surprisingly, they start to argue. Tony decides he's had enough and turns to leave, and that's when Gloria makes a huge mistake: she threatens to go to Carmela.

Few people have experienced the full force of Tony Soprano's anger and Gloria finds herself suddenly among the elite. In a moment of simultaneous epiphany and rage, Tony realizes that Gloria's self-pity and vindictiveness are exactly like Livia's. Screaming, "I didn't just meet you, I've known you my whole ****ing life!" Tony chases Gloria, overturning furniture and eventually hurling her to the floor. With Tony's hands almost crushing her windpipe, Gloria has just one thing to say to him: "Kill me."

But he doesn't. Tony leaves her there and has Patsy Parisi give her a message later. While taking a test drive, Patsy pulls a gun on Gloria and tells her to stay away from the Sopranos or, "my face will be the last one you'll see. Not Tony's." In case she needs further clarification, he adds, "It won't be cinematic."

Carmela, meanwhile, has her own concerns. She hasn't been feeling well, physically or spiritually. While her physical ailment is quickly diagnosed as a slight thyroid imbalance, her spiritual wound is more difficult to salve. She sees a new priest, Father Obosi, who counsels her to live off what's earned by "the good part" of Tony. Later, when Carmela and her gal pals -- Rosalie Aprile, Angie Bompensiero and Gabriella Dante -- meet for lunch, they all agree they should be more self-sufficient. Shortly thereafter, Carmela stops wearing the sapphire ring Tony gave her and starts reading about the real estate license exam.

Carmela's not the only one thinking about self-improvement. Jackie, Junior -- whose relationship with Meadow is "SO over" -- decides to make his mark on the world by robbing Gene Pontecorvo's card game. He convinces his buddies that the score will earn them respect. But when they do the job, everything goes horribly wrong. Christopher and Furio are there. Flustered, they kill the card dealer and shoot Furio in the leg. Their get-away driver leaves them. Jackie manages to escape, but Christopher wants to find him and kill him right away. When Tony tells him no, Christopher angrily accuses him of being a hypocrite who'll let Jackie get away with shooting a made man.

But Tony's got another plan. Since Gene is part of Ralphie's crew, the robbed game was officially Ralph's. And Jackie and his cohorts claimed to be "with Ralph." So Tony declares that Jackie's fate is Ralph's to decide. So, will Ralph let Jackie's string play out a little longer?

Or will he snip it off?

Re: from the official site

I think I saw the ending a lot differently then everybody else.

Now this isn't any rumor, or anything I've read off the net, so take with a grain of salt, but I think the ending pretty much said...

Spoiler:
Gloria is dead already. Now, it wasn't just the scene with the Cadillac, but you have to go back to one before. Tony notices that Carm isn't wearing her ring. Carm comes back with a story about re-sizing it. Yeah, right.

My point? I think Gloria told Carm. I mean, hell, she wanted to die. Melfi said it best. She was like a moth to a flame. Grade A psycho.

The final shot with the car didn't have it blowing up because they was something else going on...like a dead woman in the trunk we were staring at.

Two points against this...

A) How did Tony (or anybody) find out she did it?

B) I "think" I saw her in the preview for the finale. But I might've confused her for Adrianna. And, they could always bring her back as either a ghost (like *****) or in a flashback (again, like *****).

Spoiler:
The reason Carm did not have her ring on was cause she feels guilty.

Gloria does not have the stungats, to tell Carm what is going on. She was so jealous of the life that Carm lives. Carm is upset, and feels crazed becasue she needs to learn to deal with Tony sleeping around.

If you read my post you will see what I think of the ending.

I wholeheardedly agree on the issue of
Spoiler:
Tony and Ralphie
, and I do believe that
Spoiler:
Ralphie DID set up and will kill JJ.

Spoiler:
But I believe that she could and would call Carm. Ever seen Fatal Attraction? Just because you're psycho doesn't mean you don't have guts.

I obviously could be wrong. The ending was made to be ambigious so that we WOULD talk about it all week. I guess we'll find out then.

You know who has really good recaps, and a good Sopranos forum? mightybigtv.com

Okay, I don't think anyone actually answered my question but gave their own opinons of what they think happened. What physically happened right after Parisi picks up his cellphone and says it's me? Anyone....?
