How often do you change your password?

How often do you change your password for online sites? Banks, online stores, etc

For me like once or twice a year.

Re: How often do you change your password?

Rarely. Except those sites I visit infrequently. Then I can't remember what combination of letters, numbers and special characters I used. I guess wrong 4 times, get locked out and reset my password. Repeat 6 months later.

Re: How often do you change your password?

The more important question is, (to everyone who reads this) what’s your credit card number and full name?

As for passwords, I ain’t sayin’.

The IT department at my work makes everyone change their passwords every 90 days.

Re: How often do you change your password?

It depends. I have to change my passwords at work every 45 days. For personal stuff, anything that involves any of my financial information has the password changed every so often. Everything else, not so much, I don't think I've changed my password for this forum in the last 16 years.

Re: How often do you change your password?

I have a small collection of passwords that I use because I can remember them. I don't want to have to maintain a notebook full of used and discarded passwords, life is complicated enough.

When I worked at places that required this I would change from abc092018 to abc122018. Do they have filters for that kind of stuff now?

For anything I care about I use 2-Step Verification.

Re: How often do you change your password?

I rarely change unless either 1) it prompts me, or 2) I get a notice that they detected my username/password on the dark webs.

I used to have basically 2 (not including work). One for personal business website/app, and one for all others.
A couple of years ago, I went through and started making a unique password for almost every website and/or app that I used because I got a few of those notices that my id/pw used on "this site with that combo" was detected on the dark web/nefarious site. I got notices from old sites I hadn't visited/remembered in years that they were hacked, so I think that's where they got it. Of course what I really hate about those notifications from hacked sites is it doesn't tell you what your passwords is. So I just try my most common ones and see if it lets me in, then I know I have to change that combo everywhere else.

I keep a spreadsheet and also use an app.
Sidenote, twice within the last week, I was prompted by an app (that I normally use fingerprint authentication) to verify my id/pw. I was thinking, isn't my fingerprint supposed to verify me?

Re: How often do you change your password?

I use lastpass and change fairly often because I only need to remember the "master" password. However, for some reason, on some sites it gives me an option for multiple sign-ons. Oh well, 50-50 chance .......

Re: How often do you change your password?

Banks online are now requiring you to change your password after 18 months or your account will get locked.

Personally I'm for that.

Only if there’s some kind of security breach.

Not with my bank. If I don't change my password after 18 months it gets locked out until I create a new password. This is new now.

Re: How often do you change your password?

For the first time, I prefer to use a long, capital letter included and complex password and don't change it for a year. 2 step verification like Gmail could be a great relief in this regard.

Re: How often do you change your password?

Have you researched LastPass?
https://reviews.financesonline.com/p/lastpass/

The most important feature of any password manager is security. LastPass implements a strong encryption algorithm. All your data stored in the vault is kept a secret even from the software. The authorization access to your account is also tight with an optional two-factor authentication which means you may opt for a second login before you can enter your vault.
Overview of LastPass Features

  • Two-Factor Authentication
  • Auto Form Filler
  • Mobile App Pin Unlock
  • Last Pass Authenticator
  • Fingerprint Login
  • Secure Digital Wallet App
  • Random Password Generator
  • User Vault
  • One-to-One Sharing
  • One-to-Many Sharing
  • Save and Fill Passwords
  • Security Policies
  • LastPass for Applications
  • Admin Dashboard
  • Family Manager Dashboard
  • Basic Reporting
  • Advanced Reporting
  • Security Challenge
  • Secure Notes
  • Emergency Access
  • Encrypted File Storage
  • Advanced Multi-Factor Options
  • Priority Tech Support
  • Premium License
  • Unlimited Shared Folders
  • User Management
  • Directory Integration with IdP
  • API Access
  • Customer Support
  • SAML Single Sign-On

I use KeePass 2 - freaking awesome program. Don't know how I went without it for so long.

Re: How often do you change your password?

Just got a Spam email that had an old screen name & old password in it. I was already notified in the past from a site that had been compromised with this id/pw and have changed it everywhere else.

It went on to say if I don't send some bitcoin they are going to release a video of me "watching" porn (because they put malware on a porn site).

Re: How often do you change your password?

For some odd reason Chrome has removed all my auto fill user name and passwords. Has anyone experienced this issue?

Never mind. It looks like the Chrome browser wasn't fully loaded. Now my auto fill passwords are showing up.

That's awesome!

Don't keep your passwords in your desk, either...
