What If You Accidentally Remove Your Porable Hard Drive Before Ejecting?

First of all thanks for the external hard drive recommendations! I got one suggested (a Western Digital)

Anyway, I accidentally pulled out of my Mac before ejecting it. One of those alert windows popped up about potential damage to the hard drive. I wasn't copying anything at the time of pull out.

So, anyway, did I damage my new external hard drive? Help!

As long as the drive wasn't in use, particularly writing, you're probably okay.

But there's still a chance it could have garbled something.

I looked at a lot of the contents at random and everything opened up just fine. So, it's probably okay...right...right?

Premature ejecting can cause problems, but it sounds like you were OK this time.

I've seen PCs lose the ability to recognize a USB device in a port where devices had been regularly unplugged without first telling the PC (ie: 'Safely Remove Hardware' wizard) that you were unplugging it. You've probably dodged a bullet if it's only happened once or twice, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Yeah, I've done this more times than I'm happy to admit to But I've never had any big trouble with the drive (and data on it). At worst, I would get a message the next time I tried to use the drive that I needed to scan (and fix errors). I've never pulled the drive while data was still transferring though.

You may never know unless you cannot access some data. You could try running some type of disk utility to check for errors but that would be it
