Is posting MGADiag info safe?

Ok that subject may be a little extreme for my question, but here it goes.

I am working on a computer for a friend of mine who uses the system for his work. I am actually getting assistance on another forum where someone has asked me to post the results from the MGADiag from Microsoft.

This seems an odd question to me so I wanted to ask here the following questions.

1. What (if any) personal or business information would be made available by posting the results of this report to the web? I've looked up what other people have posted, and there are a lot of ID numbers and whatnot that I don't know if they can be used to obtain other info. I'm sure it won't be a problem, but since this isn't my computer I want to make sure and get permission from my friend before posting anything that may refer to him or his company.

2. I am sure the copy of Windows installed is genuine, but in the very small chance it's not, will running MGADiag affect the usability of the system? I would hate to return to him an unusable system when he just wanted a little work done, he he.

Thanks.

Re: Is posting MGADiag info safe?

Are you trying to diagnose Windows Activation issues? That'd be the only reason to use the tool and post result.

As far as I can tell, the only really sensitive info that MGADiag pulls up is the activation key, and it blanks out the first two groups of the key anyway, so its not something usable to steal your key.

There's some hardware ID hashes, but as they're hashed, it's impossible to "unhash" them and figure out what hardware you have.

No, it's a hardware issue I'm dealing with. Which is why I thought it was an odd request.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but if you decide to post it, I would consider creating it in a Secret Gist on https://gist.github.com/ then hopefully you can privately share the link to it with the person helping you.

Just keep a copy of the link or favorite it so you can go back later and delete it once they're done.

Thanks for the tip, I'm sure that will come in handy more than once

A lot of people post m3u8 lists using gist. Then instead of changing the url, they can edit the list and keep the same url so you don't have to change it on your player.
And some create multiple lists for different types of content, news, music, etc (porn).
