What's the conventional wisdom on keeping battery devices plugged in indefinitely?

I have a new cell phone battery pack charger for travel. From my understanding, leaving it for months unplugged will eventually drain the battery, but is leaving it plugged in fine?

Or should I just top it off every few months?

I charge mine up after I use it, and before I plan to use it. Other than that, it sits, fully charged. I usually do end up charging it at least once a month though. The only thing I leave plugged in all the time to charge is my UPS.
I have had batteries on cordless phones, electric toothbrushes, battery packs, cell phones, all go bad after leaving them on charge when not in use. By bad I mean either not take a charge, or hold a charge for a very shortened time.

As for what I should be doing, I do not know. All I know is that I seem to get better results not leaving stuff on charge constantly.

I would recommend charging to around 40% and shutting the phone off, and removing the battery, if possible.

Leaving it fully discharged or fully charged for months is not ideal.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're talking about, but I know that according to Popular Mechanics, these days you can leave your actual phone plugged in forever and that's better than let it drain all the way.

I just got a backup battery pack that can charge other devices. I won't use it except on trips etc.

I got it fully charged and wont use it for a few months. Should I keep it plugged in somewhere all the time or just plug it in every few months to top off the residual drain?
