Cannot stand the default Verizon messaging app. Currently using Textra but if there's anything better let me know.

The default google messaging app is on the app store as "Android Messages". Have you tried that?

WhatsApp is pretty universal and works great.

Having only owned Google Nexus/Pixel phones for my last 4 devices, i've always just used the default Google Messaging app. I don't text that much though so maybe i'm not that picky about features.

Unless you're like a teenage girl into sending emojis or whatever, what could one want in a text app? Not just snark, honestly curious.

Don't like emojis at all. I just want to set colors if needed for better viewing and even assigning colors to certain groups for easier identification. Font selects and sizes, etc.

I might have had the Google app but will try the others too.

I use Handcent Next SMS... it's very customizable.

That's not really a text messaging app though. You can't message people that don't have it installed.
