How do I retrieve all my Yahoo emails?

I've been using Yahoo email since about 1998. I've left all those emails in my inbox, and there are thousands of them. It includes correspondence that I don't want to lose.

Is there an easy way to get all those emails out of my Yahoo inbox into someplace that is less likely to disappear without notice?

Re: How do I retrieve all my Yahoo emails?

Use a desktop email client (say Thunderbird if you are using Windows) and setup your Yahoo email as a POP account.

If Thunderbird (or whatever client you end up using) doesn't automatically find the Yahoo POP server settings:

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN4724.html

Thunderbird's default setting is to leave the mail on the server for 14 days (or until you delete it.) Assuming you want to keep all the mail on Yahoo once you archive it, navigate to account tools then server settings. Make sure the default 'Leave messages on server' is checked and uncheck the two sub options (for at most xx days and until I delete.)

(Thanks D.Pham for catching my error!)

Just beware that unchecking The box would delete all Yahoo mail downloaded

You can setup a gmail account and "Check mail from other accounts:" under "Accounts and Import" in settings and import them all into that account. I did that from Hotmail and still have both accounts.

That sounds good. I'll give it a try. I already use Thunderbird for getting email through my ISP mail server. I couldn't figure out how to do multiple accounts.

For future reference... from the Run box enter "thunderbird -p" (without the quotes)

That will launch Thunderbird and allow you to create and switch between profiles. I keep my personal and work email separate this way.

What do you mean by "Run box"? I'm on Windows 10, and when I type Thunderbird -p into the search window, Cortana suggests a web search.

Someone told me to read this. I won't get to it until the weekend.

Sorry, not on Windows 10 yet... WinKey + R should still give you the Run Box...

Yep that's a step by step guide to what I originally posted. Make sure you select POP email when configuring and after it's setup (assuming you are keeping everything on the Yahoo server) edit the leave mail on server settings as I recommended in my original/corrected post.

I got as far as "Skip this and use my existing email." The button doesn't respond.

Re: How do I retrieve all my Yahoo emails?

There are IMAP instructions for Yahoo on their knowledge base website, and Yahoo-to-Thunderbird settings online as well.

Anything that lets you store emails in .eml format is pretty useful. One problem I had with Gmail Backup in the past with Windows XP was that colons in the subject line resulted in the emails not downloading, but that might be irrelevant now.

It used to be that Yahoo tried making email users pay for IMAP, to make them upgrade to a business plan. Not sure if it's still that way. Maybe Verizon wants to 86 as many users as possible to look better when the next data breach rolls around.
