Verizon - switch from post-paid to pre and keep number?

Does anyone here have any experience going from a post-paid contract to a pre-paid plan on Verizon? My contract just ended and I'd like to save some money, but keep my number.

I tried to figure out how to do it online, but only saw an option to buy a new SIM. Do I have to go into a store?

I also don't want to leave Verizon, as I like my Droid Turbo and don't have the money for a new phone right now.

You could try calling them.

A possible solution would be to buy a cheap prepaid Verizon phone, activate the service and then have your number ported to it, which should close out your old postpaid account. Once the number is ported, you can switch service to your smartphone.

Another option is to use a prepaid carrier that's a Verizon MVNO, i.e. they use Verizon's network. You can use Verzion-locked phones on these carriers. Here's a list of options:

Another option is that if you're out of contract and the phone's paid off, Verizon should unlock the phone for you for free:

Since the Droid Turbo has a SIM, once unlocked it should work on GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile. There are reports of people using the phone on those networks.

Even if you decide to stick with Verizon, you should probably ask them to unlock it before closing out your postpaid account, just so you have more options.

The Droid Turbo, as with most recent Verizon post paid 4GLTE smartphones, should come factory sim unlocked. You can always check with Verizon, or find a friend with an ATT or Tmobile sim to try it out to be sure though. This site details how to change the APN:

I should also note that this phone doesn't support some LTE bands on AT&T and Tmobile, most noteably LTE band 12/17 which is primary on ATT, and pretty important for range on Tmobile. Things like WFC or VoLTE probably won't work either.

Also, if you stay with Verizon and want to just change to Prepaid, then it shouldn't be a problem BUT i would recommend doing it near the end of the billing cycle as I am not sure if they will prorate the final bill if you do the move. They do not prorate when you cancel your account or port out.

Thanks for the info guys. I may look into an MVNO, at least for a couple months, to see how it is.

If you care about data speeds, all MVNOs will throttle you as the carriers put you last in line in regards to data prioritization.
