Hidden files on USB mac

Hey guys I have a Pioneer NEX 4200 (apple carplay). I need to upgrade the firmware.

it states to have:

at least 2 gig usb drive (i have 16)
format to Fat (did that)
and only the pioneer upgrade file on there

this is the issue. I formatted to the FAT and then downloaded and installed the update to the USB drive. it kept failing stating "drive can only have update file on drive"

I called pioneer and they said there are hidden files on this drive.

I have a mac can someone please help me find and delete those?

thanks

Re: Hidden files on USB mac

They are Spotlight and Trash index files and directories. Easy answer is to use a Windows computer. Otherwise I think there is a Mac utility that you can download.

I found this free tool called "Clean Eject" which will delete all the "hidden" files Mac puts on drives:

Re: Hidden files on USB mac

First of all, make sure you've formatted it correctly. Open Disk Utility, select the USB drive, click on the Partition tab, and click on Options, and choose "Master Boot Record", like this:

Then choose "MS-DOS (FAT)" for the format, and Apply.

If you've got a newer version of Disk Utility, then just select the USB Drive, and click the Erase button, and then choose the two options I specified above.

Are you referring to the post [TheBang] made? What Partition Scheme is listed for the drive in Disk Utility (see lower right corner of the screencap)? I'm betting it's already "Master Boot Record" and the issue is the hidden files Mac uses.

Just tried this and I will see if it works

well that didnt work as well. Either I'm not doing it right or something is strange here. I did the clean eject, formatted to FAT and hit erase. Then added the folder that downloads from the pioneer firmware site. it still says "use USB or micro SD card with ONLY firmware file on the drive"

crazy its this hard to update a car stereo

Not just car. I've run into this same problem updating my LG tv. Interesting enough it was the same error message.

Clean Eject should be the last thing you run, since it will delete the hidden files right before ejecting the USB drive. As soon as you copy files over, OS X is making hidden files referencing those files.

Re: Hidden files on USB mac

Dumb question but have you emptied the Trash/RecycleBin like Kdogg said?

Re: Hidden files on USB mac

I did empty trash bin. I guess I'll load the file up then clean eject. Will try tomorrow.

Thanks
