Am I The Only One Still Using RSS Feeds?

So many sites now no longer seem to offer their own RSS feeds. Have their popularity really diminished that much? What are people using as an alternative?

Were RSS feeds ever "a thing?" I don't remember anyone ever using them, nor do I think a lot of people knew what they were.

I used to use them all the time. Now the only place I still use them is with My Yahoo. It's my home page and I have the top 10 or so stories from a number of web sites on there.

I use them a lot via feedly. Almost everything I follow I can get by using their search feature.

Once Google Reader went down, I switched over to NetVibes. I'm guessing they're largely being supplanted by Twitter nowadays.

Re: Am I The Only One Still Using RSS Feeds?

Is there a way to create RSS feeds from sites that may not provide them? I seem to remember being able to do those in the past by signing up at some site or with some app, but can't find anything on them now. Essentially it was liked getting notification anytime a website posted stories, but those were turned into RSS feeds. Anyone know or remember these or am I making it up?

I use them in the form of Firefox bookmarks. I don't have an RSS reader. With Firefox, I can open the bookmarks menu, and choose to subscribe to whatever site I'm at, whether there's an actual feed or not.

Google Reader user here, and then switched to Feedly. In my iPhone I use Newsify, that when Google Reader was shutdown starting using Feedly.

In a PC, or Android, I use Feedly directly.

I still use them all the time, but I have been told that hardly anyone uses them anymore. Google Reader's death crippled their user base.

Content sites don't like them because it allows readers to skip the main page and go directly to what they want to read.

I still use RSS...really love it. I have tried lots of different interfaces but right now I'm using:

uStart.org for my web browser, mainly at work as it lets me take a quick look at what's going on in the world.

For tablet I've switched to Inoreader which is the cleanest interface I've found.

RSS was huge at one point but I also think their popularity hasn't died that much either I mean, it's super quick to get all the updates from your favorite sites. I loved google reader - when it went away I stopped using feeds - may check them out again soon though because of this thread.

Re: Am I The Only One Still Using RSS Feeds?

I still use - and love - RSS feeds. I used them with a plug-in for Outlook 2000 (and maybe 2003) and then with Outlook 2007+ with its built-in reader. I do this because a) I use Outlook anyway; b) they're easily searchable; c) they're easily archivable; and d) I have rules set up to send me a text message and \or run an app when certain things come though the RSS feed. It's kinda sad that so many sites have ditched RSS, but so many platforms have it built-in (like WordPress) that you can often find a valid feed just by playing around with the URL, even if the site doesn't advertise a feed.

Re: Am I The Only One Still Using RSS Feeds?

I have two that I use still.
* Big Finish has a customizable RSS feed that links to my account. Notifies me whenever a new Doctor Who story download is available.
* Local public library - the feed lets me know when new DVDs have been ordered and have been added to their catalog - let's me decide if i want to go ahead and put a hold on any of them before they arrive and are available to be lent.

Re: Am I The Only One Still Using RSS Feeds?

I have a slightly different question. Does anyone know of a RSS program to easily make RSS feeds. I'm looking for something which doesn't require hardcoding and more along the lines of being more "automatic" when it came to updating the feeds I would create, if that makes sense. For example, the program would be self-contained, and I would only have to input the new information via interface, then the program would do all the "arranging" of the links where I wanted them to go (after doing an initial setup).
