Need to know how to transfer files from Android phone to Mac computer

If this were my own situation, I would be able to figure it out myself, but it's for someone else, and I don't own, nor have I ever operated, a Mac, so I have no idea what to tell them.

They want to transfer a bunch of pictures from their filled-up Android phone (in this case a Moto G) to their Mac Mini. Normally, I would have them install one of the many photo transfer apps out there that make this seemingly easy, but when I say "filled-up" phone, they're telling me they have no room for anything, not even a new app. Unfortunately, every place I click on for advice on this is essentially an ad for an app to do this. I can't find anyplace that will just tell how to do it. She knows that normally she would just connect the phone to the computer via USB, but it apparently doesn't work that easily with the Mac.

So...how do you transfer photos and such via USB to a Mac without having to download and install some new app? And if an app is absolutely needed, what pre-installed app would be on an Android phone that she could use?

Thank you in advance.

There is an app on the mac you have to install called android file transfer.

https://www.android.com/filetransfer/

Once you install that on the mac, you just plug the phone into the computer via usb and a window will pop up on the mac. You drag the files from the phone window to the mac. It's super easy. You don't install anything on the phone.

Also, if they set up a Google account on that phone (very likely), there's a good chance the photos are being backed up to Google Photos. You can go to Google Photos and download them, compare them to what's on the phone, and delete the copy off the phone.

What generation Moto G is it? If it's anything but the first gen, it should have a microSD slot.
