Do I need any Mac Antivirus?

Just bought my first Mac and was curious if any Mac users here use any Antivirus or Malware protection? I've read a lot of posts elsewhere claiming that you don't need any, but coming from 3 decades of MS DOS and Windows, I feel a little uncomfortable without any protection. Also, if you do use any programs, do you notice any performance hits?

I don't use any protection on mine. Apple does have somewhat of built in protection that is updated regularly for fly by web malware installs and stuff.

There is still the possibility of installing malware if you download programs from outside of the app store, though. As long as you don't do that you should be fine.

As joeblow69, Apple has included a built-in antimalware service since OS X 10.6

There's some debate on how well it works, as it seems to be a blacklist, i.e. only blocking known threats, and there can be a delay between when a malware outbreak is discovered and Apple responds, in one case a week later:

Avast! offers a free Antimalware for Mac users. From this article, it looks like it's got good accuracy in identifying threats, and doesn't affect performance much:
