Re: Amazon Echo

I'm just hoping they've implemented some sort of standby mode, for it would get quite expensive if it is on consuming, say, a constant 15 watts for the 8760 hours of the year. Around here, where electricity costs 40 cents a kwhr, even a clock radio (5 watts) would be $17.52 / year in electricity.

If you buy electricity from amazon, it's cheaper.

Re: Amazon Echo

No invite here yet either, and I signed up the first day Amazon had it on their page...I wonder what the criteria to get an invite is?

Anyway, I was laughing at the fact that ECHO can't provide traffic information or sports scores yet...those should have been two of the first things they thought about when programming it. Other than the weather, that's probably two things you're interested in knowing every morning.

As I mentioned on the previous page, it's completely, entirely random. But the rep assured me everyone who requested one will eventually get an invite, just not before Christmas.

That's a surprise, especially traffic. I suppose that's an easy update for them though.

A friend got a reminder that his invite was going to expire but didn't recall getting an original invite. He purchased it.

Re: Amazon Echo

I got one today for Christmas. I haven't used it a lot yet and so far it does do a lot that my phone does, but it's easier, and while I'm sure there's negatives to this, having a lot of stuff all accessible by saying "alexa" is pretty slick (music, shopping list, to-do list, etc). Of course they want to push you to the Amazon universe - Prime music, their $25/year music backup/upload service to access your whole personal music library - but even without those, it's pretty cool. I'm sure i can do some more customizing to personalize it even more.

I got the same on the 26th...a reminder that my invite expired that day, but I never got an invite. I decided to pass...I just didn't think I'd use it very much.

Re: Amazon Echo

I hate to cause of feelings of frustration for others who are waiting, but I ordered mine and turned around and sold it. I'm still interested in it, but wasn't in any hurry to have it. With these things selling for $250-300, I can take the profit I made and buy one at full price when they're made available to everyone and end up paying almost nothing out of pocket.

Name it Trevor, so you can act like you're talking to yourself.

Good idea, but I just thought of something. Maybe I can come up with something that my wife and/or daughter can't pronounce.

Re: Amazon Echo

The Amazon music integration is making this more tempting, if I ever get an invite. I have a lot of Amazon purchases beyond their Prime library, and it sounds easier to manage than stuff on my phone.

I was thinking of KITT myself. But maybe it's just because I don't want HAL talking back to me as "Dave."

Re: Amazon Echo

I uploaded almost 4000 songs form itunes to the amazon library very easily. I think If your song is matched in their library they don't waste the bandwith to upload it and just 'unlock' it for you on their cloud.

I vote for "Bitch", just because it will make you sound like an abusive husband/boyfriend.

Glad you were able to profit from Amazon! (tables turned, for once).

As for a name, I'd call the thing either Murgatroyd or Robby. "Big Brother" would be too apropos...

Re: Amazon Echo

Posts on SDeals are saying that it's available to order now ($99) for those that have requested an invite even if you haven't gotten one yet.

I'm not sure how widespread this reaches, but I checked and it is available for me and I have not received the invite. Still on the fence about ordering. Might get one to play with and gift to the in-laws if it doesn't find a use in our home.

Edit: orders made now have estimated delivery for the 21st.
