New smartphone user. Have a google sync question

So I've finally picked up a smartphone. Android based.

My question is when I go into messaging and under "enter recipient" if I start to type the person I want to text everything is fine. If I click the contact button beside that field to bring up my contacts it shows every single person I've ever emailed through my gmail account. EVER.

How in the world do I remove that feature? The only way I've found around it right now is to delete all those entries in gmail and re-sync.

Under my google sync settings all I have checked is Sync app data & sync gmail. Everything else I have unchecked.

You can delete the contacts on the phone as well.

However, what you may want to do is stop gmail from auto-adding everyone you email to the contacts list:
