Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I'm at the fastest DSL in my area, but it's still way too slow for my needs. The only other option is to pay for cable--which I really don't want to do.

Google can't come soon enough with their 100gig fiberoptics!

Those were my results using an old Motorola SB5120 supplied by Comcast. I just bought a new Motorola SB6141 and here's what I'm getting now:

Looks like I'm getting even better speeds outside of primetime:

Well, I was in a B&B in Rome with WIFI for guests, and their ISP was "infostrada", and presumably their connection was ADSL

$20 a month. I looked around and it's the only DSL service available in my area. I would love faster service but ATT says that's the fastest i can get.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I'm getting about 60 down and 35 up thanks to Verizon FiOS. But since I'm kind of out in the boonies, and it's not available anywhere else in my city, only where the newer houses are, I guess I am lucky.

I had 3 down and 512mb up where I used to live.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I still don't see how having 100+ mbps benefits unless you're downloading porn and / or torrents all day long. Is it just a pissing contest? Probably less than 0.01% of your bandwidth is actually utilitized in daily surfing.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

100+ mbps connection are sold for households where multiple family members can browse, stream video, play games, etc. Sure, one person can use it for torrents but you can see where multiple average users can need it as well.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Yeah, I see your point. Or, to buck the system of high ISP prices, 10 neighbors could get together and buy one 100 mbps connection, set up an access point on an 802.11ab network, split the cost, and each house would have an adequate 10 mbps 'connection' for around $10 / month. Yes... the cost that it SHOULD be.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Even though I get 100+ mbps for most of the day, during prime time hours my connection drops to 30-50 mbps. I guess all my neighbors are clogging the pipes watching Netflix.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

....which advocates my point above even further. It's all shared bandwidth anyway, so why not get together with your friendly neighbors and arrange a gentleman's agreement?

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Because sharing your connection amongst people in other residences is a violation of every ISP's terms of use and is considered theft which would at minimum get you kicked off their service if they don't decide to go after you legally.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Modern families really need the speed. And of course better home networking equipment.

At any given time at home, the 4 persons that live at home, me, my wife, and two daughters, could be streaming Netflix, Hulu, HBOGO, Youtube or playing videogames. That kind of bandwith at the same time, really needs the 28 Mbps I listed above.

And no, it's not 24x7 that the four of us are doing that at the same time. But it's nice to have that option whenever we want.

I also pay for unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE hotspot on my Verizon plan, so the Internet connectivity is shared among a few people

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Moved apartments and cities today from San Diego up to Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County. Also switched from AT&T Uverse to Cox Cable, as they don't have Uverse in my new place. My tv and internet cost is a bit more per month, but internet speed is a lot faster. I'd rather save the 20 bucks, and I actually prefer UVerse's TV lineup, but oh well. They really only have tiers of 5, 25, 50, and 100 and 5 is just too slow these days for me. I had 12 with AT&T.
