Re: How fast is your internet speed?

If I'm lucky I get 100 mbps. If I'm really rolling, I have gotten 200 mbps. At 200 mbps, I feel like I'm on top of the world, downloading 50 GB movies in under 30 minutes. I can only imagine all that wasted bandwidth for those in this thread who have 930 mbps. First world problems, first world excess.

Mostly, I get between 50 and 75 mbps which is speedy enough for me, a pretty heavy downloader.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

My provider has just upgraded their infrastructure to 2 Gig speed. Of course I'll have to upgrade everything on my end to see it. And then 10 Gig in 2026...

Holy crap... 2 Gig! The only drive which could even download at that sustained speed would be a fast SSD! You'd be downloading 100 GB UHDs in a sprint at 12 minutes flat... Insane.

I mean, I can see scenarios in which multiple people are watching 4K streams in different rooms while several others are downloading game updates, and Microsoft releases some big patches... But yeah, that much headroom is ostentatious.

Of course I'll upgrade my network.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Yeah, sometimes it seems like a solution in search of a problem, instead of an actual benefit. I wish it were possible to get everyone on at least, say, a reasonably priced 100MB connection with no or a large data cap, instead of these headline-grabbing things.
I've theoretically got 1GB speed, but my router/extender does some thing where I have 2 networks and it caps the 2.4 ghz network at 400 Mbps and 5ghz connections at 866.
Even with up to three people streaming/gaming/working at the same time, and who knows how many devices actually on the network, I have no real complaints (except when a video game says "You must update before playing".)
In fact I keep checking to see if I could downgrade and save money, but the next lowest tier is half the speed for only 15 bucks less, and I would lose HBO Max.

The below stat is from my old computer, connected to an Orbi router via ethernet cable. The network card is at least ten years old.

Yes, sir, you nailed it. That's the crux of the matter, the brass tacks, the big elephant in the room. Instead, ISPs absolutely refuse to do this and keep pumping out ostentatious, outrageous top-speed, very expensive, tiered individual scenarios, from which perhaps 0.1% of their uses will actually *benefit*. And there's no $10 per month 50 mbps speed option which all can enjoy, regardless of economic status or (lack) of bandwidth desired. It's the same thing with outrageously advertised 5G speeds. Who the hell cares to have a 5 Gigabit speed on their phones? For most, 10 mbps is enough. 50 mbps at the most, which the perfectly fine 4G network supplies exceedingly well.

This is a Nation of artifical wants, and ridiculous perceived needs which greedy companies foist upon us as if they're manna from heaven. It's gotten nauseatingly sickening.

Upgraded to 1gig since it was cheaper than the plan I was on (250meg). $60 a month. I usually see closer to 850-900 down but someone else must be online in my house right now.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Woah, looks like we're getting Google-Fiber in our neighborhood.

1gig is $70 a month - it's only competition is Cox cable-internet, which is WAY slower than 1gig and it's $85 a month.
Bye bye Cox!
(only other option is AT&T DSL, which requires a land-line, is slow, and when you include the land-line, it's just as expensive as Cox.
Google is a huge, greedy corporation like all the rest, but I have to thank them for stepping in and fucking the deal these ISPs made with each other, carving off slices of areas so they don't have to compete with each other, setting high prices for shit service.

Probably the only time I will ever thank Google for being the lesser of two evils. Still, $70 isn't peanuts, and $40-50 would be more reasonable and appropriate. Who knows how much that $70 will balloon up due to taxes and inevitable monthly increases. Also be sure to check for monthly data caps / over charges BEFORE signing any contract. Google might try to sneak them in.

Don't you also have Spectrum offered in your area? I know you are very close in location to me... and I've got Spectrum as an option as well as the crappy AT&T, but not Cox.

Nope, I'm in NW Irvine, only Cox & AT&T offered here, and they both suck and are expensive, but Cox sucks just a little less.
After deregulation, they carved up areas with just two ISPs each (for the most part), and neither of them is a better deal than the other.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I’m glad I updated my home wifi, using the Eero is pretty dam great. And it gives all sorts of ways to check my connection. It’s been constantly at this rate since I got it.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I would kill for $70 for 1Gbps. My only broadband choices are Verizon FIOS or Comcast. I have Verizon FIOS at their lowest rate, 25 Mbps. Upgrading to 1 Gbps would be $82/month more than what I'm already paying.

If you stop FIOS for 90days you can restart as a new customer. Both Comcast and FIOS are available in my area and I had them compete against each other for the lowest price. Eventually I was able to get FIOS Gigabit (nothing else) for $62mo, no contract. Had it for years now.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I'm getting between 200-400 MBPS for about $25 on Spectrum. If you're wondering why it's so cheap, I applied for the Broadband stimulus that credits your internet 55 bucks per month for those who lost work during the pandemic. I was on furlough for almost 4 months last year and qualified. How long the credit lasts, who knows? It will eventually go back up to $79.99.

Believe me, Spectrum is still making tons of profit even at $25 per month for a 400mbps connection! And they're getting that extra $55 per month (tax free?) from Uncle Sam and Biden's $1.5T tax stimulus package. So Spectrum is getting double-gravy and lapping it up, while the middle class gets a much higher tax bill. Pretty great isn't it?

FIOS offered that to me but in order to qualify I needed to "upgrade" to a $79mo tier (for the same service) in order to save $50. Then after the deal was offer I'd end up paying more money. lol.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Supposed to be 100 down, 5 up. In reality is approx 90 down, 5-6 up. Comcast, Older Arris Modem & TP Link wired router. Wireless is a bit more than half of that.

I'm literally stuck with Comcast where I live. If I lived across the street, I could get 150 mbs down for $50 a month from Rainier.
