Yes and no. It's more for efficiency thus giving you an active, constant, and consistent download speed.

Still the shitty Verizon DSL, 3Mb/768k plan. Waiting for FIOS in my area.

You'll probably be waiting for a long time. Hasn't Verizon basically stopped rolling out FIOS?

Meets my needs for online access and streaming. Switched from Cable to DSL about a year ago and couldn't be happier.

I believe my area was approved for FIOS before Verizon's no more FIOS rollout plan. Part of Brooklyn has FIOS already. Verizon is still rolling them out in Brooklyn.

Ah yeah, okay. I'm in Greenpoint and I've had FIOS since January. I don't know how long before I got it that it was available.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

I'm jealous of all of you who have 30-90 mbps connections. Where I am the connection is only 10/1 mbps Time Warner for a lousy $55 per month.

But, it seems the only true use that will maximize a connection > 50 mbps is for downloading torrents really fast and/or loads of porn.

And you have to worry about reaching bandwidth caps very quickly at those insane speeds.

What have been folks' experiences with bandwidth cap implementation on the really fast broadband ISPs? Some only allow 150 to 250GB per month.

i hate everyone.

I live in rural North Carolina and the best I can get is 4mb download with 400 kps upload

I pay $40 per month for that bullsh!t.

It is my only option. No other ISP is in my area.

See if they offer Earthlink, it should be little cheaper and bill and service still comes from twc. I don't know my home Internet usage, but on 4GLTE I have used hundreds of gigs and never had an issue with caps, throttling or anything

I thought I had it bad in rural Missouri...
16mb down 1.6 up for $39. I can get faster but $39 is already more than I want to pay.

Re: How fast is your internet speed?

Very rural southern Ohio, here. Satellite is the only viable option. Too far out for DSL, the closest cable is 2.5 miles away and is poor quality TV only... no internet. There is a WISP tower up on a hill not far from me, but the signal can't reach down into the valley where I live, and I don't have high hopes they'll ever try to get a signal to the relatively few houses on our road. I had to invest in a Wilson Signal booster to get a usable cell signal in our home, but I don't consider AT&T's data rates viable for a home internet solution.

I use Exede Satellite Internet - 12 Mbps down/ 3 Mbps up
$129.99/month - 25 GB cap/month before they throttle you to dial-up speed.

Were it not for the fact that my employer helps out on the expense, I'd never pay that much a month. I do typically get the advertised speeds, or faster, so I can't complain there, but I sure wish they'd bump up their cap to at least 50 GB or so. Probably not going to happen any time soon. They lift their cap restrictions from 12-5 AM each night, but I'm typically asleep then. Satellite internet has come a long ways over the past few years, but it is what it is... last-resort option when you're in the boonies.
